Mark under baby’s nose since birth?

HV and midwife’s both said they had no clue as haven’t seen it before. He’s 4 weeks now and the marks still under his right nostril. What could this be?

Did you post a photo? It’s hard to say without seeing what kind of mark

anonny55 · 27/03/2025 11:24

@TY78910 I tried to but just came up that it couldn’t upload due to size of image🙄

It looks like a very small, faint birthmark to me. I’m surprised the HV and midwives seemed unsure; perhaps it’s because birth marks on newborns are more often on other parts of the face like forehead and are often more noticeable. If it’s a birthmark it’s likely to fade away over time but it may take months or even a few years to go completely

anonny55 · 27/03/2025 12:29

@lolly792i thought it was a birthmark , it’s been there since he was born but the midwife that checked him over wrote in his red book that he had no birth marks🤔 sometimes it appears darker sometimes lighter but just at random times. Strange

It's a salmon mark, a birth mark. It'll probably fade as baby gets older. I'm really really surprised that the HV didn't know what this is!

urghhh47 · 27/03/2025 12:30

And yes it'll show up more when baby is hot or crying.

TY78910 · 27/03/2025 13:26

Yeah, I’d say it’s a birthmark too, especially as it’s been there since birth. If it’s not itchy / painful then it’s one of those things that might fade in time

@urghhh47 tbh, my hv regular answers don’t know/not sure to my questions😂😅

Did you ever find out what this was? my daughter has exactly the same since birth she’s now 7 months and it’s still there

ExperiencedTeacher · 21/12/2025 23:16

My ds had a similar birth mark on his forehead. Depending on how warm he was, sometimes it was there and sometimes not. It still shows up every now and again depending on his complexion.

Stork mark! My kids had them on the backs of their necks.

anonny55 · 04/01/2026 19:20

@Jldxxxit was also a stork bite for me! He’s 10m now and still ever so lightly there but nearly gone!
