3 week old sleeping most of the day

3 weeks old today. This is my second baby but my first is 3.5 and I can’t really remember how much he slept at this stage! He feeds every 3 hours and then is usual to straight back to sleep. He wakes around every 2.5 hours at night to feed, then the last few nights after the 3am-ish feed he just grunts/makes a lot of noises for the rest of the night and doesn’t go back to sleep properly, maybe he’s sleeping too much through the day? He is a very hungry boy and is taking nearly 4oz now. Plenty of wet/dirty nappies. Another thing is that when he does actually wake during the day (but not hungry/not long had a feed) he doesn’t seem to be awake long without crying. My first never had a dummy and was adamant this one wouldn’t either but but have introduced one with this baby as I felt like he needed it, he just loves to suck and it settles him well, which is very useful when I’m dealing with toddler as I’m often on my own with the both of them. He is happy to be awake once he has a dummy. But does this sound normal? Sleeping this much and wanting a dummy whenever he is awake? I’m concerned he’s going to turn into a grown toddler still walking round with one. He rarely has it when he is sleeping, mainly just when he is awake. I feel like a FTM all over again with a million questions!

All of this sounds so normal, he's just a different baby to your first.

My little one had a dummy really early on because she liked to suck to soothe herself that was preferable to her using my boob as a dummy! You can choose to get rid of it any age, I think they recommend about six months (although my three-year-old still has his at night - a battle I dread to tackle!)

In terms of being awake in the day when they're feeding they're awake and his wake window is probably only half an hour to an hour at this point. so if he takes a while to feed it makes sense he goes straight back to sleep.

Remember at night time they have their day and night confused until they're about three months old , the fact that he's awake after 3 am isn't surprising either.

You're doing everything right mumma, don't worry x

I worried the same about my second baby sleeping too much! Every few weeks I found myself googling it and reading forums and wondering if it was normal. He's 9 months old now and I can assure you he sleeps a perfectly normal amount, and has done for months.

Is baby gaining weight ok? If so then just roll with it and try to enjoy the peace while you can! We also give our baby a dummy waaay more than we did with our first, he's just generally fussier and it helps. So I wouldn't worry about that. I do think sometimes it's almost harder when it's not your first though, as it's easy to compare the two and wonder why the second isn't following the same pattern as your first!
