12month old constantly waking because he has to poop

I am aware of how insane this sounds, but I'm loosing my mind and wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar.

Baby wakes at 5am regularly because he's pooped and can't resettle, fair enough. If he doesn't poop he wakes at 630 ish.

He's now started waking from almost every afternoon nap, because he has to poop. He wakes up screaming because he doesn't want to be awake, refuses to go back to sleep and spends the rest of the day overtired, cranky, whingey and miserable. Nap times vary and he wakes after random lengths each time.

I think I already know the answer, but is there anything I can do? Anyone have any ideas at all? It sounds so ridiculous, but it's making us both so miserable! Any comments gratefully recieved.

Is he constipated, and doesn’t open his bowels properly?

BreakingMe · 21/03/2025 19:36

@Bignanna he has been constipated a few times, but it still happens when he's going regularly. Although now you mention it, it does happen more often when he's been constipated.

Cut any milk before bed. Same was happening with my daughter and this helped.

I mentioned a limiting to a HVonce when my 1st was little. She said you'll be glad they poo first thing when they start school. I thought she was bonkers but she was right. It's always a relief to know they've had a poo before we have to try and get out the door on time.
