Fever for 6 days

Hey all,

my daughter has been sick all week. We’ve had a trip to a&e and to a gp. She has been prescribed antibiotics for a respiratory infection and has been taking calpol and nurofen when needed. She seems to be improving one min then the next she’s hit with a fever again. The gp said as long as the fever goes down with medicine there should be no concerns but my worry is that the fever has been lingering now for 6 days. I know it’s normal for babies to have fever to fight off infection but guidance is not clear once it passes 5days. Should we seek more medical help or is this a normal process of recovery? She’s almost 1 and has never been ill before so it’s horrible to see.

How long has she been taking the ABs for?

Ceebee87 · 20/03/2025 12:12

She started them 48 hours ago. We had a good 7-10 hours without a fever so thought all was good but back to square one again. Maybe I need to wait a little longer for abs to kick in?

Just keep going. I would expect her to possibly have a fever until towards the latter end of the antibiotics course, so at least 3-4 days. As long as you can bring it down with medicine, even if it returns, you’re doing what you should. There isn’t really anything more they could do other than observe her in hospital and it’s so much better to be at home as long as she’s not getting worse.

Having been in exactly this position recently, I'd take her back tomorrow if she hasn't improved

Once it passes 5 days you have to go to the GP or hospital so they can check if anything else is going on. But it doesn't mean anything is necessarily badly wrong, but they need to check them out.
If you are worried then always go back, they always want to see babies where there are concerns.
Hope your little one gets better soon.

How did this go for you? Going through the same now with my 2yo. Goes from being fine one moment to temps of 39, incredibly irritable but no really other symptoms
