7 yo struggling to cope with emotions

My DS is a real dichotomy. In many ways incredibly confident, not nervous to join in on activities, talk to random kids or adults. Sometimes is totally happy go lucky and doesn't care. E.g. losing terribly at a game and will cope just fine. But he often seems unable to cope with the slightest infraction. Eg a friend will be a little bit mean and he will be in absolute pieces. Or I will say something slightly firmly and there will be unbelievable crying and (im sorry I hate this word but dont know how else to describe) whinging.

I know there is clearly something deeper going on but I'm at a loss to solve it. School say he just needs to build his resilience.

Maybe im over thinking it and its just a phase, but it seems to be for the last year plus.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Sounds pretty normal.
His resilience will improve with age, better sleep, success at coping with new situations and support to help him read his emotions and think about options.
