Eye contact

Hello 😊 Mum of a 13 month old. My baby is so wonderful- she really avoids eye contact. Just hoping to get some other perspectives as I don’t know anyone else experiencing the same thing locally, so thought I’d reach out further.

She really avoids eye contact and mainly wants to independently play- something I found difficult to begin with, as I think it impacted our bond! However, iv accepted this is who she is and I love the absolute bones of her ❤️ By about 11 months she did start looking at us a lot more, from a far which was and is so special. She completely avoids eye contact up close. She doesn’t share joint attention…..yet. Does anyone have any good tips for encouraging joint attention? For example if we ask her to point at something she doesn’t look at us and then look back after she has pointed.

Iv been to the opticians who have referred her for an eye test. Just wandered if anyone else’s baby has been or is going through something similar?

Thanks in advance 😊

Not the same age, but my LO actively avoids eye contact (3.5m old).. I cannot get her to look at me for the life of me :(

hope you get some answers for your LO x

Next time you go to the GP with him for another reason, flag this. If it continues, you’ll be taken more seriously if you’ve put a marker down previously.

Hi OP! Any update regarding your baby? 🙏
We have a 10-month-old boy who is avoiding close eye contact. I’m also looking for tips to help improve joint attention.

@Mommy1990 - does your LO babble, clap or wave?
mine is 9m and doesn’t do any of these :( along with the inconsistent eye contact

Hello, thanks for your replies 😊 my LO is 23 months now. Her eye contact is sooo much better now. She still avoids it up close, but she is happy to make eye contact sometimes now 😊 I can’t tell you what I did differently, I honestly can’t remember. She didn’t interact with us at all for the first 12 months- but we do back and forth conversations now 😊 so lovely! Something iv learnt in my first few years of being a mum is to stop looking at milestones- my LO reached them at totally different rates to her peers!

Hi!
He started clapping when he turned 10 months, and a bit later pointing. Your baby still has time, try not to worry about this yet. But I know it’s hard.
I’ve got more concerns about our baby hands stimming and babbling. Hopefully things will improve soon.
