10 year old started period, question about height

Hi all, my 10 year old daughter has just started her first period (she will be 11 in July). I was a similar age and she has been showing signs of puberty for a while now so we expected it to happen soon, just not this soon! My question is mainly around growth in height after the first period - for those who have girls who have started their periods did you notice much increase in height after or does it slow right down? She hasn't had much of a growth spurt and is still quite short and I am concerned that she will not grow as much now. I understand that there is not much we can do as there are other factors but would just love to hear your experiences. Thank you!

No, no signs of growth after. Mine’s height are relevant to mine and DF’s

LadyKenya · 14/03/2025 13:03

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that the height of a girl, a year after she has started her periods, is what height she will be. I did not change much in height myself, after starting my periods.

Snorlaxo · 14/03/2025 13:05

My dd stopped growing after her periods started. She’s only an inch shorter than me so I didn’t have concerns about that.

It’s definitely not true that girls stop growing after their periods. I had my first period at 10 and continued to grow. I’m now 5”8

PoorLion · 14/03/2025 13:07

My 12 year old is 5ft6 and started periods a few months ago, I think that she has grown a bit since then

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 14/03/2025 13:07

When I started secondary school I was one of the tallest in the class. I was 5'4". My periods started at the end of Y7, in the following year I grew about half an inch but no more.

One of my friends started her period when she was 10 and was the smallest in the class at secondary as she stopped growing then.

Faithsmumof3 · 14/03/2025 13:11

Dd was 12 when started periods and had quite a growth spurt a year later. She's 16 now and has scoliosis and at her last scan we were told she has approximately 6 months of growing left. Is 5ft 4 (taller than me).

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 14/03/2025 13:12

My dd started on her 11th birthday, poor child, but she has grown from about 5 2 to 5 8 and is still growing, she is 16 now.
Her dad is tall at 6 1 and her brothers are getting tall too, I'm average height. I think it depends more on genetics rather than age of puberty.

Tcateh · 14/03/2025 13:14

Age 9, 5ft 2 . Now 20 and 5ft5

Blarn · 14/03/2025 13:15

I only have experience of myself. I started at 11 and grew several inches in my early teens.

Clicked this thread as dd1 is 10 and I think is showing signs of starting soon. She would be gutted if she stops growing as is currently very tall and wants to get to six foot!

mamakoukla · 14/03/2025 13:24

Just before turning 12; gained over a foot after that and kept slowly creeping until mid teens

TheCompactPussycat · 14/03/2025 13:27

DD started her periods at 16 and has grown another 4 or so inches since then.

RoachFish · 14/03/2025 13:27

I think there are plenty of exceptions but generally speaking girls grow 2-3 inches after their first period. How far from your height is she now? Not that that is always an indication either.

Justlovedogs · 14/03/2025 13:37

Not scientific at all, just my own experience. I started my periods at about the same age as your DD, OP, and I definitely wasn't 5' 4" then or until several years later!

35965a · 14/03/2025 13:39

I was 12 and very short, one of the shortest in the year. I definitely kept growing after and ended up at 5’4 which most girls were around (except for a few lucky tall ones) by the end of school.

ItGhoul · 14/03/2025 13:43

Started my periods at 11 and I was one of the shortest girls in my class at the time. I'm still short (5'2") but I'm pretty sure I grew a good four or five inches between starting my periods and reaching my adult height. I stopped growing when I was 14.

coxesorangepippin · 15/03/2025 00:58

I finished growing at 19

Periods at 11

Walkingbkwrm · 17/03/2025 13:37

I’m the other way round to a lot of people - stopped growing at 12, but didn’t get my period until 14. Clearly I’m a bit weird!

MadKittenWoman · 17/03/2025 16:40

Why does it matter? I’m 4” 9” and it’s not damaged my love life or career.

BritBratGrot · 05/12/2025 22:23

Hi, i found this thread so hope you don't mind me reopening it @tabbycat4321

Can i ask, how much extra growing did your DD do?

I've been focusing on this a lot with my own DD, but I might start my own thread to discuss that

whatandindeedwhy · 05/12/2025 22:33

Absolutely not true for me. Got my period around age 13. Was the shortest girl in class. Shot up over a single summer around 16. Became the tallest.

user2848502016 · 05/12/2025 22:43

Most girls stop growing about 2 years after starting their period, but yes growth does slow after they start them.
My 14 year old grew maybe 2-3 inches after starting hers at 11, she has stopped growing now. I was similar.
My almost 11 year old started her period about 6 months ago and is still growing.

750ml · 05/12/2025 22:47

My daughter started her periods at 10, she grew mostly before she started, I would say she was probably about 5:5 and ended up at 5:8.

BritBratGrot · 07/12/2025 13:29

I think the tricky thing to untangle here is correlation vs causation. Ie did your DDs stop growing (or rather growth slowed then stopped) because they started their periods, or did they start their periods because / when their growth spurt had largely finished so their bodies were matured and ready to start?

I ask because my DD, just turned 12, is showing signs she's relatively advanced in puberty but hasn't yet had a growth spurt. Or if she has its much smaller than expected.

She's got breasts, and quite a bit of pubic hair. She's about 5ft 1. I'm 5' 5, her dad is 6' 1. There are a few short men in the family, my brother is 5' 7, her paternal GF is 5' 8, but the rest of the men are 6' or taller, and the women are all between 5' 4 and 5' 7. So I'd be really surprised if 5' 1 is her 'proper' height

She's a bit overweight, and I can't shake the feeling that she's entered puberty early and been 'robbed' of her rightful height due to this.

I'm not sure if she's started her periods! She says she did in Feb, again Mar, then nothing since. On further probing i think Feb/Mar were very small amounts of blood, just light spotting.

She's very emotional at the moment and had some black discharge the other day so I think they might be beginning soon.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

In terms of how overweight, 'podgy' rather than huge, weighs 52kg i think. But walks a lot and doesn't eat much crap, just genetics and lack of a cardio sport i think, she's generally fit healthy and strong

So confusing for me
