Hard to tell from the pics but I'm more inclined to think from the variation in size and how white they are, it's dandruff. Also if they were eggs that had grown that far down her hair and had that many she's literally have lice crawling her head.

Christwosheds · 01/03/2025 20:18

Nits leave white, empty egg cases. If it’s nits then there will be live lice near the scalp. If it’s just dry skin then the white pieces will easily come off the hair if you try and blow or slide them. Egg cases are stuck to the hair and harder to remove. They look more like nits to me but could be either, the pics aren’t all that clear.

Agree with pp, looks like dandruff, if the eggs were that prominent you would definitely see lice crawling , especially on light straight hair like that.

I'd say dandruff.

But I think pp is incorrect in saying eggs are white... I think I read they can be darker too.

Good luck! Hope it's not nits!

Bungalowknees · 01/03/2025 20:28

Separate and lift her hair near the roots and check for moving lice. You might need help of a torch or in my case also a magnifying glass.

If all those white specks are empty nit shells there should be a considerable amount of livestock easily found. I’m inclined to think it’s from a dry scaly scalp. Good luck.

Eggs are glued to the hair and look different to dandruff. Eggs are tiny and there’s no mistaken them.

catsnore · 01/03/2025 20:48

The eggs are usually glued to the hair up near the scalp - they look like tiny grains of sand and are darkish when live and lighter once hatched out. White/yellow big flakes are dandruff.

Have you got a nit comb? It's the only way to tell for sure (unless it's a big infestation and they are crawling everywhere in which case you can visibly see them on the scalp). If you wet the hair and put conditioner on, the comb goes through easier, and the lice get stuck in the conditioner.

hotfirelog · 01/03/2025 21:03

Not comb will soon tell you.

hotfirelog · 01/03/2025 21:07

Nit comb rather!

PangolinPan · 01/03/2025 21:08

If you can easily pull them off between two fingers it's dandruff. The egg cases don't really come off.

Cheesesteakyum · 01/03/2025 21:11

If you get a nit comb and have a look at the scalp in the area behind / down from the ears that will tell you. Or if there are loads you’ll see them without a comb.

hotfirelog · 01/03/2025 21:26

Tbh the more I look they look like egg cases. My DD was like that once and I just hasn't realised. Took me ages combing all the nits out!!

Endofyear · 01/03/2025 21:51

Doesn't look like nits to me - but if you're unsure use a nit comb and comb from the scalp, from behind the ears and nape of neck, you'll see if there are live lice.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 01/03/2025 21:55

Shake head and agitate the hair over white paper . Niis will be small dark spots.
It's horrible isn't it Flowers

mindutopia · 01/03/2025 21:59

Just get a nitty gritty comb tomorrow if you don’t have one and conditioner and give a good comb. It will be obvious.

Strawber · 01/03/2025 22:14

Hi op I know about this.

It looks like dandruff as large sizes and further down the hair.

The live lice can we hard to see and detect in the early stages the best option is to turn the light on your phone and shine down each sections and under because the eggs will reflect a browny golden colour close to the scalp and are very obvious when you do this.

moana1234 · 02/03/2025 21:24

thanks so much everyone for your help. I have been inspecting all day but i can barely see any of the white spots now her hair is dry & the few that are there i'm confident are dandruff as can easily be removed. Fingers crossed it stays that way!!!

I think you'd know if it was a case of nits that bad as she'd be complaining of the itching
