Locking the toddler’s door from the outside?

I just saw an American social media post in which people were advocating putting a lock on your toddler’s bedroom door handle for safety. The aim being that they can’t get out of their room at night time. Is this the norm? Are we being totally stupid for having not got this (still in a cot but moving to a bed soon)? I can’t imagine locking our kid in and them being okay with it? The consensus on the post seemed to be think it was totally normal and crazy to think that anyone wouldn’t.

I don't understand why anyone would put a barrier between their child and the toilet at night. I have to get up twice during the night and I'm an adult.

Edited

We used the stair gate on their door once they were no longer in the cot as climbed out but before they were out of nappies at night. As you can see from this thread some babies climb out of cots from 10 months old. Most are still in nappies for a good while after this.

So on that basis do you consider closing the door dangerous?

In terms of fire - no.
A closed door can usually be opened quickly incase of fire. If I knew I had a door that was liable to sticking or jamming, I'd leave it slightly ajar.

I'd use my plane to make it not stick any more.

Until there is a fire.

My husband and I would always want our LO to seek us out for security and comfort. We are her parents so she takes priority ateotd.

No matter how tough it gets, no, you cannot do that

Totally agree with you

Never had a lock (obviously) bloody hell. And never had a stair gate. Literally never been a problem.
surely a child should be able to move around their own home freely. What could they feasibly be up to that would be so dangerous. If a child wakes up in the night, they’re most likely just going to come into their parents bedroom or call for help.
thwy are highly unlikely to start swinging from banisters in the dark and playing with knives.
