Persistent cough

Hi all,

My DD has had a cough and a snotty nose since before Christmas. Her cough hacking, and often leads to her being sick. Her breathing can be quite wheezy too, and she has always been a grunty baby but it's just gotten far worse over the past 2 months.

I've taken her to the doctor 3 times now and all they have said is that she is happy and well within herself so not to worry. But it just doesn't feel right. They said she has mucus on her chest but she is clearing it by coughing so it's nothing of concern.

Has anybody had anything similar?

Is there any asthma or allergies in the family?
How old is she?
Id consider asking for a trial of a steroid inhaler.

Agree with the comment above. We’ve just been through similar with DS who is 4, colds would always go to his chest and he’d have a hacking cough and rattling/wheezing at night, struggling to get his breath when coughing and also being sick.
After the last bout of this I insisted they try an inhaler and he now has one and also has a proper asthma assessment in a few weeks. Have a look online re asthma, apparently 1in 10 children have it so it’s very common, and important to control it.
Hope your DD is on the mend soon.

The other question to ask your GP is whether they will do a swab to find out what infection your LO actually has. Something like mycoplasma (hundred day cough) can really linger.

It’s really normal. How old is she? From 9 months til when they started school, mine had a chesty cough from November to May. It was one viral infection after another every few weeks. Thankfully, they are 7 & 12 and very rarely ill now and not asthmatic.
