Reaction to chicken pox vaccine - help

My son (aged 3) had the first shot of the chicken pox vaccine yesterday. He has woken up this morning covered in chicken pox like spots! From googling it seems a rash can occur some days after the vaccine, but not the next day. He’s fine in himself. What should I do?

The spots are only on the top half of his body (and the vaccine was given at the top of the arm).

The spots are only on the top half of his body (and the vaccine was given at the top of the arm).

There are various other spot/rash causing viruses that toddlers catch around the same time as the chickenpox vaccine like hand foot and mouth or sixth disease (HHV6/roseola - here www.nhs.uk/conditions/roseola/ ). Are the spots itchy? Could you go and see your health visitor or even a pharmacist for advice?

The other possibility is coincidental chickenpox (which would be really bad luck). There's a guide here for rash after the chickenpox vaccine. If you look on page 2, it suggests that chickenpox-like rash less than 5 days after the vaccine is probably ACTUAL chickenpox, caught just before the vaccine was given https://portal.ct.gov/immunization/-/media/departments-and-agencies/dph/dph/infectious_diseases/immunization/fact_sheets/guidelinesforrashevaluationpdf.pdf?rev=c1340b916fae436d8db06ab4162656cb&hash=D873768E231B2B17B23E6BC0A806B6F2

I'm interested in this as my LO got the first dose of the chickenpox vaccine on Monday, and so far the only side effect has been longer naps! I hope your LO just has something else mild that goes away quickly. If your LO seems well, that makes me think NOT chickenpox? Do update if you ever get to the bottom of this...

Thank you. They’re not itchy and he doesn’t have a temperature. He is perfectly fine in himself.

Did this turn into actual chicken pox. DD2 (17 months) has the vaccine last Friday and since Monday has had a rash just on front of her body. No where else, not filled with water, absolutely fine in herself. Can't remember DD1 having this x

Has anyone given neurofen with the chicken pox vaccine? I’m getting mixed advice on google! I’m worried he will have a reaction. Any advice would be great Thankyou!

The problem with ibuprofen and chickenpox is at the rash stage of chickenpox. Giving ibuprofen in the 72h after the MMRV or VZV vaccine doesn't have the same risks. But if your child comes out in a rash and you think it's chickenpox, you should stop giving ibuprofen until you know whether it's chickenpox or not (GP or pharmacist visit).
