Year 1 phonics screening

Sorry. Wasn't sure where to put this.

Tonight we had parents evening for DD5.

Teachers pleased as she is making great progress, she is pleasant in class and more importantly she is happy and content.

They have had a few practice runs of the phonics screenings, and at the moment (although they have some more time) the teacher doesn't think she will pass the screening test at the end of the year.

She has suggested that a SENCO referral is needed - not that she has any SENCO needs, but she wants another teacher to look over DD to see if there is anything else that needs to be put in place before year 2.

We don't have any issues with this. If there is something that can help DD I'm happy that this is being looked at now, rather than her struggle and have to fight for it later.

Ive never really held much stock in phonics testing, SATS etc but now DD could possible struggle I'm a bit worried.

Great that school are recognising this and putting some extra support in place.

Have a read of your child’s school website, which should give you details of the phonics scheme being used, the policy around phonics including support offered and ideas for parents to help their child.

I think this really depends on how much you do at home with her. If you are doing lots and she's struggling, I'd be concerned and lapping up any help the school can put in place. If you aren't, then I'd be less concerned but would be doing half an hour practice with her a day.

We do reading every day during the week, and she is moving up with her reading.

We do sounds/ letters/ blending a few times a week - will be increasing this now. We do a lot of what I call casual learning where I get DD to write a shopping list, if we make a cake I put flour on the counter and she writes in it.
