Crawling

Hello.

My little boy has just turned 8 months and isn’t too keen on trying to crawl. He loves to stand (with support) or roll and will go up on his arms but not all fours. He rolls over and over to get himself around. He’s good at sitting but since he started standing he puts his legs down (they’re pretty strong😂) to stand instead. I’m not sure if there’s anything I should be doing to encourage him? I’ve tried putting him in the kneeling position but again he put his legs down hard to stand instead.

I know he’s going to do everything at his own pace he’s just my first baby so I worry there’s something I should be doing with him to bring it on but he’s constantly the floor playing with things doing tummy time so lost on what else I can do. I go to baby groups and up until now I’ve never really taken note of other babies or compared which is lucky as it’s easily done. I had a few comments about him not crawling yet which upset me. He’s very chatty and active I don’t doubt he’ll do it just after some advice I suppose.

thanks in advance xx

He could be one of those babies that just doesn't crawl. Sounds like there's no problems with weight bearing on his legs and he's getting himself around so you might find he goes straight to cruising. Mine started cruising at 8 months so it does happen.

Crawling is actually not a developmental milestone. It isn't required for walking. Sitting and standing is. My LO didn't crawl until 11 and a half months. Like yours, she rolled everywhere. Walked just over a month later. You've nothing to worry about!

My third child never crawled, he just decided at 10 months to walk. No messing around for him, he wanted to walk/run with his brother and sister.

Sounds like you are doing fine - as long as they are moving and content, they develop at their own pace.

Mine sat still till 11 months, then bum shuffled at Usain Bolt speed for another 4 months before finally walking!

Don't worry about it, please. ( Also, what they don't tell you that life suddenly gets harder when you're chasing them everywhere so don't rush this phase away. All in his own time.)

Honestly op please don't worry. My eldest literally sat like a potato watching the world go by until 18 months then one day just took off and that was that. He has a gymnastics medal and runs into school each day just like all the other kids. Just relax and enjoy cuddling your baby, they're all different.

I could have written this myself, except my LO is closer to nine months. They're sitting and rolling, they love being pulled into a standing position, but crawling just isn't happening yet (which they are super frustrated about). I figure they'll work it out in their own time! I give them lots of time on the floor.

Mine is 10 months and still not crawling. Likes to roll or stand with support 🤷🏻‍♀️ They'll get there x

Tooearlytothink · 30/01/2025 20:11

Please don't worry yourself. Our DD didn't crawl until 10.5 months, cruised for ages before hand and after but didn't walk independently until 16 months. Now there's no stopping her. People aren't kidding when they say you'll look back on this stage & miss when they stayed still

Thanks everyone for your messages. Definitely made me feel better. He’s 9 months next week and starting to army crawl so definitely heading in the right direction! ☺️
