3-year-old coughing non-stop – any remedies that work?

My 3-year-old DS has been coughing almost non-stop—sometimes for an hour straight, including at bedtime. He had a high fever from Friday to Monday but is feeling better now, apart from the bad cough. The GP prescribed antibiotics today, but I’m wondering if there’s anything that could help ease the cough in the meantime.
ChatGPT suggests mixing a teaspoon of honey with 30–60ml of warm water—I’ll give this a try tomorrow. I’d love to hear what has worked for your kids!

Warm honey and lemon.

Raising the head of the bed.

Calpol so atleast the cough hurts a bit less.

No magic cure unfortunately. Hope your DS feels better soon.

Higher pillow, Olbas oil in a diffuser, and a hot steamy shower before bed.

Aďd table spoon of black currant jam to cup of hot water. Stir.
ŪSip as needed

Smothering feet in vicks vapour rub always worked on mine. Thick layer over soles of feet then clean pair of socks. Weird but true!

Antihistamine

Chop an onion put in a jar, add few tablespoons of honey on top ,let sit overnight, strain and give a teaspoon on juice few times a day . Works wonders

Head propped up/extra pillow, calpol and a sterimar nose spray

You need a Vicks vaporiser or similar, Olbas oil in hot water works well too . I used both when my son was young as he was prone to chest infections and they really helped with the coughing

WhatMe123 · 29/01/2025 22:29

Weirdly the Vicks on the feet thing does often work 🤔

Beautifulweeds · 29/01/2025 22:57

As others have said, head more upright, warm honey and lemon, vicks, hot baths with vapour salts are good too. Xx

A humidifier always helps when DDs are struggling, vapour baths, Benadryl, Vicks on chest and feet. Hope they feel better soon it's horrible when they're like this
