Baby is nearly 6 weeks he drinks about 5oz every 2 hours but he seems to be spitting it and sometimes sick out and just won't settle and seems irritable so u think I am overfeeding him

I think a general rule is around 24-30 oz over 24 hours. I'd make sure to wind him well too after. How many 5oz bottles is he having over 24 hours?

Colourfulltrees · 25/01/2025 17:10

Probable about 7 bottles in 24 hours I would say at 5oz each

Have you looked into reflux? The meds can help.

Are you doing paced feeding? Letting baby choose how much he takes and when he needs a break?

That doesn't seem too much over the average, is he releasing wind ok? If your concerned I would get him checked out

How do I get meds for reflux

First I'd do a quick bit of reading about the symptoms (sorry I know that's a pain when you're on your knees but I can't remember it all now and mine had silent reflux which is a bit different). Then speak to your GP. The meds can cause other issues like constipation so it's not something to try unless you're pretty confident that's the problem.

In the meantime, paced feeding and trying different winding techniques may well solve it for you.

I would guess that your baby is suffering from something like reflux.

Mine is in his 40s now, but your description so reminds me of his early years. He would gulp down large amounts of milk, but would bring a lot of it back up, and was very unhappy most of the time (daytime, anyway - luckily he must have been OK at night as he slept through from an early age). My concerns were ignored by the health professionals back then, and he was very unhappy until he was nearly 2 years old when I presume, with hindsight, that he grew out of it.
For his sake and yours, please ask your health care providers about this.

Yes. That amount does seem like a lot to me…..but very baby is different. Are you feeding to demand or on a schedule? Bottle feeding makes a baby ‘fuller’ so I would ask HV about quantities and timings. Sorry can’t help more as I breastfeed so have no idea how much the kids are until after six months…..

Colourfulltrees · 26/01/2025 07:14

I am feeding on demand. I have tried size 0 extra slow flow on mam he is drinking it and seems OK just hope it's not too slow for him.
