Ended up in a&e with my 8 week old last night, he's been sucking in at the ribs when breathing, really congested, off feeds and crying when drinking ect. They said he's really congested and sent us home but said if he don't drink 24 ounces in 24 hours to come back, problem is the 24 hour deadline will be 11pm tonight and I have another child, he's drank 11 ounces in 14 hours, okay when he's asleep but screaming crying when he's awake. His chest was clear and obs all fine, I don't know if I'm being overly cautious or there's something wrong, any advice welcome! X

Is there anyone who can babysit your eldest or possibly have them for a sleepover?

Can anyone look after your eldest? I'd want to go back with such a small baby. Did they nebulise or give dexo?

RampantIvy · 23/01/2025 13:21

If he is sucking in at the ribs and his chest is clear you need to go back NOW and ask someone from ENT to look at him. He may have a narrowing of the airway.

Does he have a barking croupy sound?

Take him back. Have you got anyone who can look after your eldest. With such a tiny baby you can't be too careful so please take him back

He has no temperature, just sounds very congested being treated for a milk allergy to, I'm not sure if it could be silent reflux, they said he's sucking in at his ribs only mild because he's struggling to breathe through his nose x

Did they test for the big three viruses (RSV, flu, COVID)? They do that in A&E for every baby with a cold at my local hospital. Helps them work out how worried to be.

Mamaxo · 23/01/2025 15:22

@OtterMummy2024 no no mention of that but I think because his chest is clear and temperature and oxygen normal they wasn't overly concerned x
