My son won’t hold his penis

My son is nearly 3 and has been potty trained for c4 months now. The issue is, he will only pee with mum or dad holding down his penis (to stop pee going everywhere).

He starts nursery in a couple of weeks so really needs to start holding down his own penis asap, but he absolutely refuses and gets quite upset at the idea.

He’ll touch his penis so that’s not the issue, the issue is only with peeling.

He says he doesn’t want to get pee on his hands, so I’ve let pee get on my hands and shown him it’s not a big deal we just wash it off. I’ve tried making it fun, different peeling positions, peeing target practice etc., but nothing works.

I’m at a total loss and so worried he’ll be distressed and hold urine at nursery because they (rightly) won’t hold his penis. Does anyone have any suggestions?

He’s otherwise bright, capable, no sensory/other issues.

Good luck, I hope you get this sorted. I hope the GP’s a bit more helpful at your next appointment.

Oh I feel your pain. I remind my four year old constantly but he won't hold it to pee and we end up with a piss covered bathroom.

Can he not sit to pee?

Has his Dad demonstrated how to pee standing up? I told DH that it was his job to show DS how to do it. I think it’s easier if you’ve got the same toolkit!

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/01/2025 18:52

Let him sit. One day you won't be able to get his hand off it. When he's ready he will do it. My son sat for a long time.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2025 18:52

One way to encourage holding it down himself while peeing is to put cheerios or little bits of tissue paper into the bowl as targets, or play a fireman game.

Another is to make him clean up pee that ends up outside the bowl. Boys all need to be made aware that this kind of mess is theirs to clean up, and starting early often means there isn't a problem by the time they get to school.

He is sitting down

Very odd post and post title

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/01/2025 18:57

@notevenasmidgen The OP didn't say that.

No but @notevenasmidgen is jumping on everyone who suggests it. Helpful, eh?! 🙄

This post is weird.

I have a 3 year old son and he sits for a wee.. I thought it was normal for toddlers to sit for wee’s at this age..

Same here. No holding involved

SchoolDilemma17 · 11/01/2025 19:06

MuskIsACnt · 11/01/2025 16:51

So does every other little boy just sit to wee and the wee goes in the toilet not everywhere?

Yes - my experience so far

notevenasmidgen · 11/01/2025 19:08

@sanityisamyth

I just feel like defending poor OP from poster after poster who haven't read the thread and for the continuing posts that suggest the same thing again and again and even more continuing posts still calling her odd and suggesting this never happens. All based on their own children, when other posters have given genuinely helpful advice.

A strange thread, be weary.

Thanks. I did go back after urology said they wouldn’t see him but the GP dismissed me again. I think you’re right I need to go back.

i assumed all little boys pee went everywhere and they were all holding their penis down.

Definitely go back , as your son may get self conscious when he gets older.

When he is sitting on the loo to wee he needs to make sure it is pointing down the toilet and then put his legs together so it stays down
have had situation with grandson where wee went across the bathroom instead
I couldn’t believe I’d forgotten- have had 3 sons and four grandsons

Yes to this, and also lean forward a good deal.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2025 19:12

MuskIsACnt · 11/01/2025 16:33

Even sitting pee goes everywhere if it isn’t held right down.

The urine hole is kind on the top/side rather than the end. I did take him to GP for this and he was referred to urology who said there’s no issue (albeit without seeing him).

This needs investigation.

oakleaffy · 11/01/2025 19:16

@MuskIsACnt Love your username-
But back to the Urologist-
I’m not a male, but it’s definitely not usual for little ones to be spraying wee everywhere either standing or sitting- My son saw a urologist as a toddler for a hydrocele-
they said it wasn’t necessary, but I had the op done anyway and my son ( now grown) was so glad I did it when he was little.

Best of luck ! 🙂

liberfuga · 11/01/2025 19:17

Op, you may find the peer pressure and instruction from nursery staff is sufficient to crack this. There is so much my little one will do at nursery that he won’t at home. They often go to the loo in gangs so seeing their friends doing things can help.

he also needs to sit on the loo to prevent wee going everywhere

I don’t think it’s weird. I have three DS and they always stood for a pee in potty or toilet. It helped they were tall (for the toilet).

lover99 · 11/01/2025 19:40

get your husband to show him how its done and that its ok

NPET · 01/02/2025 17:48

90yomakeuproom · 11/01/2025 16:26

Might be a daft question but does he have to hold it? Can't be just stand close enough and wee? 🤔

Then the pee will go everywhere! It's bad enough when they "aim"!!
(I'm a frequent babysitter.)

NPET · 01/02/2025 17:52

oakleaffy · 11/01/2025 16:54

My son as a child always sat.
He only stood ( he said) as a teenager , otherwise his todger would land in the water.
🤔😂

Um I don't think so. I've done enough babysitting to know that NO boy is that, um, well-endowed.
