My son won’t hold his penis

MuskIsACnt · 11/01/2025 16:24

My son is nearly 3 and has been potty trained for c4 months now. The issue is, he will only pee with mum or dad holding down his penis (to stop pee going everywhere).

He starts nursery in a couple of weeks so really needs to start holding down his own penis asap, but he absolutely refuses and gets quite upset at the idea.

He’ll touch his penis so that’s not the issue, the issue is only with peeling.

He says he doesn’t want to get pee on his hands, so I’ve let pee get on my hands and shown him it’s not a big deal we just wash it off. I’ve tried making it fun, different peeling positions, peeing target practice etc., but nothing works.

I’m at a total loss and so worried he’ll be distressed and hold urine at nursery because they (rightly) won’t hold his penis. Does anyone have any suggestions?

He’s otherwise bright, capable, no sensory/other issues.

Might be a daft question but does he have to hold it? Can't be just stand close enough and wee? 🤔

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 11/01/2025 16:27

Does he sit or stand?

ApolloandDaphne · 11/01/2025 16:27

Can't he sit down?

If you're teaching him to stand, let him sit?

brummumma · 11/01/2025 16:28

My 4 year old still sits down to wee....He doesn't use a potty but uses the big toilet though and logistically given his size it's just easier until he's bigger.

BackAgainSlimLady · 11/01/2025 16:29

This post is weird.

I have a 3 year old son and he sits for a wee.. I thought it was normal for toddlers to sit for wee’s at this age..

YouveGotAFastCar · 11/01/2025 16:30

Why does he need to hold it?

Mine is just 3 and does, now, because he finds aiming it amusing; but for the first six months or so, he didn't, he just sort-of stood close enough.

He sits down maybe 35% of the time, but I tend to leave it up to him how he pees as long as he's doing it cleanly and doesn't leave wee everywhere. If he's been at home with us for a bit, he tends to start sitting, but there must be kids that stand at nursery as he'll always stand in the few days after he's been in nursery.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/01/2025 16:30

So tell him to sit.

MuskIsACnt · 11/01/2025 16:33

Even sitting pee goes everywhere if it isn’t held right down.

The urine hole is kind on the top/side rather than the end. I did take him to GP for this and he was referred to urology who said there’s no issue (albeit without seeing him).

So does every other little boy just sit to wee and the wee goes in the toilet not everywhere?

Well so far, yes 🤷‍♀️ (son and grandson).

Do you put a child’s loo seat on the loo with a step or just use the adult one?

Tiptopshapeop · 11/01/2025 16:53

My nearly 7 year old DS still sits to wee. There is no actual rule that says boys need to stand.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/01/2025 16:53

(Child’s loo seats have a raised splash guard)

My son as a child always sat.
He only stood ( he said) as a teenager , otherwise his todger would land in the water.
🤔😂

I'd go back to the dr as that sounds hypospadias.

Retrospeaker · 11/01/2025 16:55

My DS sits to wee and as long as he’s far enough back on the potty he doesn’t need to hold it down IYSWIM. He does hold it as we taught him to when we were training him as he wouldn’t sit far enough back, but he doesn’t need to now.

Snugglemonkey · 11/01/2025 16:56

My son sat at that age. I wish he still did!

Thanks. I did go back after urology said they wouldn’t see him but the GP dismissed me again. I think you’re right I need to go back.

i assumed all little boys pee went everywhere and they were all holding their penis down.

Can he sit on the toilet and lean forward which I could imagine will mean that the wee should be angled down more

MrsS11 · 11/01/2025 17:00

Sit and teach him to pull his knees together so it naturally goes in the right place

notevenasmidgen · 11/01/2025 17:09

Don't understand all the confused posts OP. My son is 3 and knows to point his penis down when sitting on the toilet. Otherwise his pee flies out of the toilet and soaks his trousers.

He just did it naturally after the first few wet pants and trousers situations. For your son give him a reward chart and tell him if he can do ten pees pointing his penis down into the toilet then he can choose a special chocolate at the shop or something like that. He'll get the hang of it.

Something about this post feels very off.

do we need to engage in further conversation on how boys go to the toilet?

notevenasmidgen · 11/01/2025 17:11

Btw just to add there's nothing wrong with his penis, he's just tiny and that's the size and shape of his body. There's not enough penis for it to hang down iykwim. He just presses it down slightly and has no bother now. He's only been potty trained 4 months but he's got the hang of it now.

I agree, it’s a bit odd

notevenasmidgen · 11/01/2025 17:12

@BackAgainSlimLady

There's nothing off about it. Other than an entire thread of posters unhelpfully getting themselves confused and assuming OP is teaching her child to stand to pee, or the rest of posters who can't understand that because their child's pee goes straight into the toilet bowl, that all children are built differently and some little boys will make a mess if they don't press their penis down a little to make sure the flow goes straight down.
