My sons in year 5, i'm unsure of when its ok for children to walk home alone. I seem to remember being out with my friends and walking home in year 6. Possibly even year 5. i don't think my son is quite mature enough yet, but isnt far off it, he wouldn't have to cross any busy roads, but some minor roads.

Yr5 was loved at DDs school.
My DD actually walked there alone in summer of Yr4 as well, but it was just a 5min walk

Most can walk home in year 5. Depends on parents and children.

The school usually has a policy (and a form to sign) for home walkers so first start there and see what their rule is.

My kids primary allows it from Y5, but we waited til the easter break of Y5 and started then as it gets dark about 3pm here in winter so we wanted them to have all summer to get used to it.

He got a couple of friends on route home. So hopefully he'd walk with them. I wouldn't let him do it in the dark.
