Limited babbling

I’m getting really worried about my son and wondered if anyone is in the same boat. His babbling is really limited, he will say the word ‘mama’ and has said ‘daddy’ before but not for a long time. Most of the sounds he makes now are an O sound, a MA sound and a Brrrrrrr sound and that’s it. He doesn’t string lots of babbling sounds together. He doesn’t try to imitate words or sounds that I say. Does anyone have any advice or been through something similar before? He’s 13 months.

He's really young. I thought you were going to say he was two. Everything is almost certainly fine, but I would probably make an appointment to check his ears and ask for a referral to audiology. My little one had glue ear which did lead to a slight speech delay and he hardly babbled.

My DD is 20 months. Up until literally a few weeks ago, she barely said a word and just babbled to herself. The babbling came late too. Over the last few weeks something has clicked and she is saying words repetitively, quickly picking up new words and occasionally putting two words together.

13 months is still early, I wouldn't worry. Just keep talking to him and pointing things out and he'll soon surprise you

He sounds entirely normal. None of my 3 children were saying more than that at that age. My ds barely said anything until he was 2!

I know it’s so easy for me to say not to worry, but he really does sound like he’s exactly where he is supposed to be. You might come across babies of a similar age who can say more but it all evens out in the end.

I'd echo what others have said, it sounds fine to me.

DS wasn't really a babbler at all, had only about 20 words at age 2, and really took off age 2.5.
He was much more of a physical baby!

Sounds really normal for a 13 month old. Like the PP, my DCs were very physical and coordinated from a young age, constantly climbing and jumping. Not interested in speaking at all until around 18 months or so. But when they started they picked up new words very quickly and no issues at all.

13m is still very little. I wouldn't be concerned yet. My DD doesn't babble or say a word and she is nearly 21m. I think the HV mentioned a SALT referral at 18'm on the off chance they'd accept. She had to have hearing tests firsts too x
