Urgent help needed from any CMPA parents!
Apologies for the long post but I’m really frustrated and don’t know where to turn.
My son is 7 weeks old. He was initially being fed with cow and gate but was projectile vomiting it. I changed him to kendamil but he became really constipated, had blood in his stool and kept vomiting.
We ended up in a&e to see a consultant. They didn’t think it was CMPA but I insisted we tried a hypoallergenic formula. They agreed and gave us Aptamil Pepti 1. He was doing ok on this for a couple of weeks. The constipation stopped and went the other way, he was going 6-8 times a day and there was no blood.
However the formula is very thin and he was bringing it up constantly. It was clear he was in pain from acid reflux so we went back to the GP who prescribed infant gaviscon. Without 5 days of starting it, he had another 3 bloody nappies.
We ended up in a&e again and the consultant took blood and stool samples and said it was likely an allergy or infection.
She prescribed puramino and said continue the gaviscon.
From the first feed of the new formula, he has been inconsolable. Screaming and not passing wind from either end (his stomach was rock hard). He managed a couple of dirty nappies but they were full of mucus.
I took him back to the GP on the second day of using puramino and asked to change back to aptamil pepti 1 and asked to switch the gaviscon to carobel.
We looked at his test results and it shows an allergy but no infection.
I’m waiting for the chemist to order in the carobel but in the meantime I’ve been feeding him with the aptamil pepti 1 without gaviscon. He still seems uncomfortable but nothing near as bad as he was with the puramino and he’s bringing up a lot of the feeds.
We have an appointment with the paediatric team in three weeks but I’m at my wits end.
does anyone have why advice or experience?
all the docs have said they don’t think gaviscon is the issue but the bloody nappies reoccurred when it was introduced which seems odd if it’s not the issue
