Ideal sixe for a childs bed?

  • title should read size not sixe!

Currently 2.5 year old DD is in her cot but rapidly outgrowing it as she is tall. We also have a sofa bed in the room which was brought for occasional guests but mostly used for reading bedtime stories and one of us sleeps there when she is ill (mostly because she once had a febrile convulsion and I'm worried it could happen again without us knowing).

Starting to think about what type of bed to get her and not sure what size to go for. Tossing up between a normal single or a double or small double so I could sleep in there with her if needed. Will probably fold the sofa bed up and have it as a sofa for now unless guests are staying. If anyone brought their kids a bigger bed did they later resent the space it takes up? We don't have her toys in the bedroom at the moment but I guess we will at some point. The room is about 3x3m so not a box room.

Also did you try to find one bed they could use for the rest of their time at home or buy a toddler type bed and then buy a different bed when they got older? We need to buy a low bed as she has a gross motor delay and will struggle getting into a normal bed so not sure how long children like sleeping on low beds.

I think in your situation, I'd buy a decent mattress (so it's comfortable for you to sleep on as well) and set it up as a floor bed so it's low for her to access. There are very fancy ones about, but there's also a popular IKEA Kura hack, or just shorten the legs on any basic bedframe you like.

In terms of size, I'd be inclined to go for a single and save the floor space for toys (and a desk when they're older), but I know people who have gone straight to a double. It sound like you're keeping the sofa bed in her room? How much space would you have left if you got a double/small double?
