8 year old suddenly worrying about death

My 8 year old DS is suddenly worrying about death. I don’t know what has brought this on. He has been asking (mainly at night) what happens when you die.
If your DC has had this how did you handle it? X

I remember having these worries at a similar age, mostly at night when I was in bed.
Nothing brought it on or had happened to raise my fears.
I think it's quite a common stage.
Encourage him to talk about it and try and answer any questions he has.

Watching with interest as my 6yo is the same and also struggling with answers.
