Just wondering can you dye baby clothes with fabric dye like Dylon?

found out baby no2 is a little boy and was wondering could I dye my girls old sleeping bags ? I know there only sleep bags and it doesn’t matter there pink but I feel bad putting him in pink ones , might just get knew but that’s wasteful also 🥲

Yep it depends on what the fibre is. If it's pure cotton or a really high cotton content, Dylon would work.
The dye is the same as on any new clothes which is why you're meant to wash new clothes before putting them on babies. You can get dylon in hobbycraft and lots of other places.
I had a girl then boys and just left everything as-is. They didn't seem to mind. But I did dye things that had baby food stains that wouldn't shift.

Yes.

I was given a set of three white sleepsuits and 10 white muslins. Dyed them all green. Hate white clothes, especially on babies.

I did this. The result was ok but the clothes were a bit 'cripsy' and felt kind of dried out. It's hard to explain. They might have been ok with a bit of fabric softener but I don't usually use it so didn't have any to hand.

I dyed all ds's neutrals pink when we found out DD was a girl. Varying shade results depending on fabric type but no crispiness as pp wrote!

Just remember to rinse well. Bung them all in the washing machine with the dye kit and boom!

My 9 month old boy is currently in a pink sleeping bag napping next to me. I promise he doesn’t mind, or even notice 😂 I don’t put him in overtly girly clothes, but sleeping bags that no one even sees? Absolutely.

good luck if you do decide to dye them though.

Bear in mind thread is usually synthetic so any visible stitching may still show up pink (or whatever colour is used).

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 19/12/2024 14:34

I tie dyed a bunch of white babygros many years ago (bit of an old hippy). It caused no problems at all and they looked fabulous.

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 19/12/2024 14:40

I tie dyed and batiqued (very enthusiastic first time granny) loads of babygrows, vests and muslins, rainbow colours. Baby looked fab and many anrticles are still doing the rounds.
Anything synthetic tends to come pretty meh.

What do you think is going to happen if he sleeps in pink ones?

Maranda27 · 19/12/2024 18:45

Thank you everyone!

@MajorCarolDanvers I think he’ll turn into a slay queennnnn 💅🏻💁🏼‍♀️🤣

I don’t think anything will happen him I just don’t want him looking back at photos and obviously in his sisters hand me downs that’s all, I’ve no issues dressing him in boys clothes that are pink and not obviously girly girly stuff like if he wants to dress girly when he’s older he can yano💁🏼‍♀️

Yes, it’s easy because they are so small (obviously skip anything with prints). My daughter was given so many handmedowns in pink that I dyed some different colours for a bit of variety. Got the best results with red.

ADHDHDHDHD · 19/12/2024 23:01

Is it a problem to have hand me downs? Surely that's lovely?

ciaopizza · 20/12/2024 01:09

I put my so in the pink. He didn't know!

Being an old hippy I tie dyed loads of things for mine. They survived. Both the dye and the embarrassment.

Just thought I’d update this to say I decided to chance dying a few bits before they went up to the attic with the Christmas bits and they came out so good! Double washed them and put an old white towel just to see would the dye bleed at a 60degrees wash and nope perfect! So impressed!
