How long does it take to recover from flu?

My 3yo DD has flu (I know it's flu because I've been in hospital with it and they tested) she has been fine mostly, a low grade temperature, cough and lethargic and she's not been eating as much as normal.

However it started last Thursday so it's been 6 days of her not eating much and the last 2 days she's barely eaten anything

Is this normal should I be concerned and contacting the GP to check her?

Is she drinking plenty and is she having some pain relief? Having a 3 yo with Influenza must ge tough Flowers

RedRobyn2021 · 17/12/2024 20:04

Um hit and miss if she's drinking enough, she's been ok today but yesterday I don't think she was.

She usually only has water or milk but I've been offering her squash/apple juice/hot chocolate/fruit smoothies/ice lollies just to encourage her to have more

I think I might call our GP and ask for a telephone appointment tomorrow, I don't want to waste their time but I'm just bit worried and not sure

It's absolutely fine to ask the GP for advice or to call 111 especially if she's not eating. I would always rather have them checked than miss something, especially if she's not eating has the 'flu Flowers

The last time I had flu, it lasted around 3 weeks. It was hideous.

mindutopia · 17/12/2024 20:21

I think with flu anything up to 2 weeks is probably quite normal. I would expect probably around 10 days though. The main thing I would keep an eye on is a really thick cough or raspy breathing (potential pneumonia) or uncontrollable fever/lethargy.

Yeah I've had it a couple of times. I think the minimum is usually 2 weeks.

Sorry OP, that's not great the week before Christmas is it? Flowers

@TinyMouseTheatre

It's worse than Christmas, I'm 40 weeks pregnant on Saturday and I'm really poorly. All she wants is me.

I'm living in hell at the moment, can't sleep because I can't stop coughing. I had to go in hospital because I couldn't stop being sick and became seriously dehydrated.

I took DD to the GP this morning and they said there's no sign of infection and not to worry too much about the food, just make sure she's drinking enough which we're trying to do but she's being enormously disagreeable atm

(((((HUGS))))

I feel your pain, I have a poorly elderly mother ( proper poorly ) , a spoiled brat of a husband, I have a heavy cold, surviving on 3 hours sleep , still trying to keep a job down and keeping on top of everything plus trying to get Christmas organised , Im sure you are totally frazzled

When I had flu a few years back it was two weeks before I felt like eating anything and everything tasted horrible, really metallic . I settled on tinned pears, I could manage perhaps one or 2 twice a day. Just tinned pears and the juice from the tin. Then it was about 3 weeks in when I started craving a McDonalds - I dont like McDonalds , but DH drove me up, took me over an hour to get that tiny cheeseburger in me, the effort of going out had me ruined for the rest of the day, but the following day I woke up hungry and ready to eat

Flu really is a nasty virus and I know for myself I was back on form for about 2 months , I went down with it NYD and it was coming Easter before I was fully fit

Just offer up anything and everything, no matter how weird it seems to you. she might not be able to vocalise how everything is tasting weird so shes just refusing

Good luck with the upcoming birth xx

I just can't imagine how bad that is FlowersFlowersFlowers

I know that she just wants you but can you give her a favourite drink and some Calpol and let DH look after her tonight?

Have they managed to give you anything for the sickness and coughing too? Even if it's just paracetamol Flowers

Hi I know this is a post from last month but I’m in a similar situation with my 6 year old. Started on Friday and except the odd time he’s wanted to play (very brief) he’s been mostly laying on the sofa watching tv , he’s not got much of an appetite but he is drinking. He seems very tired.

How long did it last with your little one in the end? Thanks

I don't know about DC but I started with symptoms late on 19th Dec. Went to work on 20th but probably shouldn't have and then went back to work on 30th Dec. Don't think I would have managed going in between those dates but luckily I was off anyway.so for me it was 10 days but it's left me quite tired still.

Has he had the vaccine? I had so probably came off a bit better than those who hadn't Flowers

By the 20th she was feeling a lot better and eating more!

Also if anyone is interested I managed to stop being sick and gave birth on Christmas Day at home!

Our bodies are pretty amazing aren't they
