Sickness and diarrhoea 3 year old

Hi everyone,

Just after a bit of advice as my just turned 3 year old DS has had a sickness and diarrhoea bug for almost a week now (will be a week tomorrow). He’s not being sick constantly but has thrown up every day, only once yesterday and today but is just not well in himself and very sleepy a lot more than normal. My worry is that nobody in the house has caught this bug, took him to GP on Monday who said she believed it to be a sickness bug. Tuesday he couldn’t keep fluids down so took him to A&E as advised by 111 and they gave us some diarolyte to syringe in 5ml every 5 mins plus some anti sickness medication but yesterday he was sick again half way through the day and he has just been sick again today after all day no sickness. Starting to become really concerned that this is something more than a tummy bug due to how long this is going on for, has anyone else had tummy bugs last this long and were your little ones totally wiped out by it or should I be more concerned and get him checked out again?

Any advice I would really appreciate thank you!

Do they have a temperature?

@teatoast8 he doesn’t seem to have a temperature, no. Doctor also checked when we went in on Monday and he didn’t have a temperature then either.

What's his fluid intake like?

@Ratfinkstinkypink he only drinks juice so we are currently trying to get that down him in small amounts, anything given in larger amounts just comes back up, I have also been giving him diarolyte the same way the hospital showed me and he is weeing now whereas he previously wasn’t before which is why I took him in, but not weeing the amounts he normally does as he normally drinks a lot. Just worried how long the sickness is lasting he was sick once on Saturday evening, once a tiny bit on Sunday evening then multiple times Monday morning and throughout the day, and lots on Tuesday only stopping when hospital gave him the anti sickness meds, then he wasn’t sick at all on Wednesday, just once yesterday and once today an hour or so ago. He’s had diarrhoea on and off as well.

Today is day 7 and managed to get 1 slice of toast down him and a cup of diarolyte, and he’s had a really small more solid type poo. I thought this meant he is on the mend but he is still so lethargic and sleepy, really don’t know if this is normal or not and my anxiety is getting the better of me!

OP my DS had very similar when he was 3 years old. He was sick at least once every day for a week. No diarrhoea though.
We saw doctors twice in that time and were advised it was just a bug. I think it must have been because he stopped being sick eventually. I cannot remember as to whether he was sleepy as it was a long time ago. He did finally stop being sick though!
You have my sympathies, I found that week hugely stressful. I kept thinking he was better and then he'd just be sick again 😞

Are you giving him dairy products? If so, stop. When you have a stomach bug a lot of people become unable to digest milk products for some time afterwards. My kids can't have it for a good fortnight after a bug, they just keep throwing up or it goes straight through them.

If cutting milk/yoghurt etc makes no difference and it's still happening in a few more days I'd go back to GP.

What is his temperature?

Are you giving diarolyte regularly?

KirstyP0594 · 14/12/2024 13:06

@Longmanbill thank you, every time I think he is getting better he ends up being sick and then becoming all sleepy again! I really hope we are near the end of it now!

@Balloonhearts no dairy products, the only diary products he eats/drinks is milk and yoghurt and I know milk is a no go with a bug and I don’t imagine he would touch yoghurt at the moment. The only thing he can manage to get down is some toast and the plain Pom Bears so at least he is getting that inside of him as I guess having no energy from food would be making him feel worse!

@SENMUMwhatnext he won’t let me take his temperature even the doctor didn’t manage to when I took him the other day. I will try again later to see if I can get a reading when he’s asleep maybe. He has been having around a cup of diarolyte a day and the rest juice, think I’m going to give more diarolyte today, I have been giving it to him 5ml at a time so it doesn’t come back up, as it seems if he has a large amount of liquid at once it comes straight back up.
