Did something really mean and now feel terrible

I know I did completely the wrong thing here, my DS was given a balloon at a little show, after the show his behaviour was not great, he also wrapped his balloon up in his toy. In a moment of frustration I pulled the balloon string off the bow and let it go, my child was very upset. Ive apologised and explained I was wrong to do this but I still feel really terrible, anyone had a similar experience? Have I scarred him for life

This is properly unhinged, well done everyone. Truly a work of art.

It's quite mad isn't it 😂

Coldheart3 · 08/12/2024 20:59

We all do silly things out of frustration, doesn't mean you're a bad mum. Once my son wanted an apple pie from McDonald's but his behaviour was so atrocious on the way home that I ate it instead 🙈. Not my finest moment but you live and learn!

pure abuse 😅

She is asking whether she was wrong to upset her child. I’m sure she doesn’t need to add potentially murdering animals to that.

She was wrong to upset her child and she was also very wrong to just let the balloon go. It is litter and can kill wildlife and farm animals.

People need to stop being oblivious to this.

Only on mumsnet would you get such vast and mental replies

The use of the word "cunt" by one poster is just <chef's kiss> 👌🏻

Stupidwolf · 08/12/2024 22:19

Classic Sunday night mumsnet, never a dull moment. Good luck to the op wading through this in the morning

I might be wrong here but I doubt the person was howling at the fact that an animal died but more because of how the post escalated into telling the OP that not only did she upset her son she has now murdered an animal, the OP was asking for reassurance but it took a turn like it always does on here lol

Jesus Christ. I accidentally let a birthday balloon go whilst getting my toddler out the car on her birthday. She was devastated. For maybe half an hour.

OP I hope you're not still reading this thread because it's absolutely batshit.

This was an accident. What OP did was deliberate and done as a knee jerk, impulsive loss of temper.
Unpleasant and pretty immature behaviour, but the fact she is feeling bad shows she is not a bad mother. She let her temper get the better of her. She can learn from this and model good behavior when we mess up to her child, apologise to him, get one back for his bad behavior, hug and kiss and do something kind to move on (maybe not another balloon as they are a bit gross but perhaps a game or cake out together).

I think that was a horrible thing to do. I'd buy him a new balloon tomorrow.

I think that might set them up for even more problems though. Sending the message that if you act badly, you might get something taken away....but you'll get a new one the next day.

OP, it was an unkind thing to do, but we've all done it. You've apologised, try not to beat yourself up about it.

My kids have pushed me to the limit and I've responded in a way I wouldn't usually do. It happens. I apologise, we move on.

Correct. But, unlike a lot of posters on Mumsnet, you're not a sanctimonious twit

🙌🏻

@Balloonhearts

You think laughing at someone who has lost their livestock doesn't make you sound like a cunt?

Going to have to disagree there.

Hen, I get it, you're all about the balloon cause. Even got the username to show for it. Good luck to you in your campaign. I'm right behind you. You're spectacularly missing the point, but you're clearly passionate about balloons and animals 🫡 god love you.

devongirl12 · 08/12/2024 22:52

@Spacedoody what the hell??

What's wrong with you?

Maybe you should read the room.

What's funny about the death of an animal?

We’ve all done things like that in haste. Just try to take a minute next time, to calm down…no harm done…

Well this escalated quickly 😅 Mumsnet never disappoints when I need to feel more normal 😂

Absolutely 😂

I've honestly never laughed so hard at a Mumsnet post 😂 👍🏻 Christ almighty, read the room.

I've seen a horse die from colic, they are in agonising pain, in much the same way a cow goat or sheep would be. It's horrible and utterly avoidable. I'm so sorry for you that you feel your comment is in any way appropriate. Perhaps you could reflect on things more before you hit the post button with offensive comments.

As a farmer who’s had an animal die from eating a balloon that was let go like this and then fell in our field, I find this very difficult to read that someone would do this on purpose.

100% agree, there is so much ignorance about the danger of balloons.

latetonews · 08/12/2024 22:55

OP. Your DC will be fine. It's okay for him to learn that we're all human and we have our breaking points. Apologise and move on.

Fair point, my son is still unsure about the functionality of his belly button. There is a slight edge to his glance when I mention it.

Your kid is going to need therapy.....No he isn't. Hugs. parenting is hard and sometimes mistakes happen.

Actually the username is a photo from my babies funeral. There was a bunch of balloons there and they floated in the shape of a heart.

I'm sure your God loves you too ❤️

theeyeofdoe · 08/12/2024 22:59

You getting upset about it will be more traumatising.
Remember parenting is not about you, it's about your child,

Yes, this sort of litter can block their intestines, catch in their throats and obstruct their airway. Or get caught round the necks and beaks of birds and strangle them.

The animals die in great distress. Do you really think that is funny?

Spacedoody · 08/12/2024 23:01

No, I'm fine thanks.

Jesus wept 🙄

OP clearly did something in the heat of the moment. Just like the poster who said they ripped their child's notebook. These aren't bad mothers, they had a split second of overwhelming upset. This is Mumsnet and she should expect a bit of fucking solidarity and actual useful advice on how to move forward from making a mistake in the moment.

Instead she's getting lectured that she might kill a horse.

I hope all of you are vegan, cycle everywhere, and have never bought a balloon in your life you absolute sanctimonious bunch of lecturing harpies.

As a mother of a former clown who, following an incident, is now terrified by balloons I find it hard to think that someone would make this decision deliberately. Think of the bloody former clowns.

OK do you need to have a little lie down. This thread is insane.
