Toddler bad breath

Hello

For the last few days I've noticed my 2 year old has awful smelling breath.

She's brilliant at brushing her teeth, I have to stop her from trying to do them 10x a day, and limit her to 3x.
I always supervise and brush them myself for her at the end to make sure we get them all, and brush her tongue.

For the last 3 days or so I've noticed her breath really doesn't smell nice, even just 30 mins after crushing and having not had anything to eat/ drink afterwards.

At bed time tonight she's been very kissy and cuddling, getting her face in mine and rubbing noses so it's so noticeable.

I bought her a new toothbrush today as hers was well used, but it hasn't helped.

Has anyone experienced this before?

She's coming to the end of a cold, and has a bit of constipation (not sure if that's relevant).

My son always had bad breath when he had a bout of tonsillitis coming on. It was often the first sign he was going to be poorly. Perhaps check the back of her throat for any redness and white spots.

DD had bad breath as a child, turns out she’s lactose intolerant. The dentist suggested it as a cause and she was right.

I can always smell on DDs breath when they are either getting a new tooth cutting through, or when they are about to get ill. Id bet there's a bug heading your way...

Tonsil stones

Check there isn't anything stuck up her nose. That sometimes causes great to smell

bebopalula111 · 08/12/2024 20:18

Breath not great 🙈

Hoplittlebunnyonrepeat · 08/12/2024 21:40

Thank you all.

Will try & get her into the drs tomorrow.
She had a temperature for 3 days last week, which has stopped a couple of days ago.

She's got a slight temp again now and has woken up crying tonight, saying ow and touching her ears.
I wonder if it's a ear infection, unsure if that could be related to bad breath.
I've given baby neurofen for now and will see what the Dr says.

Thank you for suggestions.

Is she drinking enough? Upping her fluid intake might help.

woodenbatandball · 08/12/2024 21:43

My daughter had this and she had tonsilitus

TinyMouseTheatre · 08/12/2024 22:34

It does sound like it could be an infection. Keep an eye on her temperature and fluid intake overnight and if you're concerned at all call 111 Flowers

Does she have all her teeth or could a back set of molars be coming through? My DS always had terrible breath when he was teething and again with illness

RubyRedBow · 08/12/2024 22:46

I think I’ve heard kids smell off when unwell.

RubyRedBow · 08/12/2024 22:47

Is she using age appropriate minty toothpaste? I found the fruity ones don’t always cut it.

ArgosOrArgoose · 08/12/2024 22:51

An ear/ throat infection can cause bad breath yes! I could always tell when mine were coming down with one.

TinyMouseTheatre · 09/12/2024 07:56

How are they this morning @Hoplittlebunnyonrepeat?

Hello

Doctor confirmed one ear was inflamed,.couldn't tell me if it was definitely a bacterial infection but gave us antibiotics anyway so I'm hoping this will make her feel better.

She's much more herself today but we're giving nursery a miss and having a rest day.
I'm lucky that I am able to work from home, so will get a few hours in today whilst she's sleeping and make up the rest later.

I'd never heard of bad breath being a symptom of illness before, every day is a school day as a parent!
It just so happened she took a turn about an hour after I posted, at which point I knew she wasn't well

Thank you everyone for your advice/ suggestions.
