Please please parents of reflux babies help me
my 5 week old little boy has been through so much already, and since last week he’s started with reflux, he vomits most his feeds back up, we were given Gaviscon which has helped slightly in that 50% of his feeds he keeps down but still he’s visibly in distress most the time struggles now
to poo and relieve gas which is probably due ro
the gaviscon and I’m really at my wits end. Not only is it draining with all the cleaning up but I feel like im
failing my boy. I’m so stressed and I just want him to eat and be happy please help me

Go back to the gp tomorrow and ask for omeprazole. It won't necessarily stop the reflux, but it should make him more comfortable. They may also be happy to prescribe lactulose to help with the constipation caused by the gaviscon xx

@Cocobellax Handhold OP - I’ve been there and you’re right in the thick of it all just now ❤️ You’re not failing your boy! You’re reacting to his discomfort and trying to find a solution. Which is exactly what a good parent does.
Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding?

Remember and do all the basics as well as the medication - hold him upright for 20 mins after each feed, stop frequently to wind during feeding, tummy massage and bicycle legs to help the gas.
It does get better, I promise ❤️

Try infacol before a feed - worked wonders with my two!

Is your son on formula or EBF? Also before starting him on gaviscon was the reflux causing him pain/ distress and how was his weight gain?

Imisscoffee2021 · 02/12/2024 23:25

I was you 16 months ago! Its horrendous, nothing like I'd imagined having a much wanted newborn! Nights were awful especially and the "witching hour: which was just the acid build up, poor kiddo.

Gavsicon constipates, get him on omeprazole. It worked for my son, he was in a high dose due to him being a big baby even at 3 weeks when we went on, it felt so wrong to be giving a tiny baby a PPI but it was the lesser evil and the pain went away with the reflux. In his case the refmux went away when the HV finally accepted he had cmpa, never had a rash but his nappies were mucusy with bits of undigested milk curds in his poo so look out for that. He was like a new boy once we controlled the reflux, was such a relief, and he's been weaned off omeprazole since he was 11 months.

PassMeTheCookies · 02/12/2024 23:49

Have they ruled out CMPA?

LavenderFields7 · 03/12/2024 00:04

Smaller feeds more often. Warm baths and tummy massage to help with the constipation.

BroomAdventures · 03/12/2024 12:04

My DS was like this. Turned out to be CMPA. Gaviscon helped but he was still very unhappy. I didn’t find omeprazole helped and found it difficult to get into him - even the liquid.

GridlockonMain · 03/12/2024 12:07

Is he breastfed or bottle fed?

My son had horrendous reflux, it was miserable. He had omeprazole but I don’t think it helped him at all.

He grew out of it from about 6 months but it was rough until then. Sending you much sympathy ❤️
