Mental hair

I'm growing out my 3yo's hair and its needing to be tied back in some way but i cannot get it right.

  • very thick
  • grows forward from a quite low crown (you can see here, ive pulled front back but it overlaps with the forward growth)
  • points up or outward, like a one year old's 'fountain' (also see pic)
  • probs curly but not long enough yet to see
  • extremely dry. The ends look like straw some days (i use a deep conditioner and wash only weekly)
  • hates having hair brushed or bobbles in. She says 'ow' every time, but im not doing anything that would actually hurt (and she's hard as nails about falling over or banging heads)

Any advice welcome. The reason I'm growing it is that I don't want her to be the only girl with short hair when she starts school in Sept. Its the age where kids are saying "you're a boy", and she will be wearing pants (aka trousers) not a skirt.

I'd use products, but only if the dont contain nasties like phthalates, SLS, fragrances and alcohol

Some kids do have a sensitive scalp.
Can you put it in French braids?

raysan · 01/12/2024 23:43

@Pinkissmart , i would like to, but I tend to have seconds before she's flinging her head, and pushing my hands away!

Her hair is beautiful!!!
My little one gets dry ends and coconut oil really helps, half up half down buns would be really lovely in her hair
And if you can leave the bobbles out completely for a bit will encourage hair growth

Agree with PP on coconut oil if natural and organic.

@raysan maybe check out the brand Kokoso.

Pigtails? You wouldn’t have to try sweep it backwards against the grain then, i also used lots of little bands to keep it out of her face during PE and swimming at school xx

She is 9 now n won’t let me do her hair lol but this is what i used to do to tame it lol xx

My little one hates having her hairdone, so we've kept it in bob and put a bow hair clip in to stop it being in her eyes all day, she will now use headbands too. No chance she will ever wear a bobble. The bow helps add a girly element to her outfits.

Does it have a natural parting?

Porridgeislife · 02/12/2024 07:09
  • Distract with a screen (only time we do this)
  • Spray hair with water from a small hairdresser sprayer to give you more control over her hair
  • Divide front half of head into two bunches, tie with bobbles. Use a plastic tail comb to do this.
  • Put back part into a single or two bunches, incorporating the tails of the front bunches.
  • Use clips to keep neat if needed.

My 2.5yo has loads of fine hair and it needs to be tied up else she spends her day pushing it out of her eyes. This hairstyle looks neat and keeps it up all day.

TooManyNiblings · 02/12/2024 07:41

Have you taken her to your hairdresser? A good cut makes mine and DD's hair so much easier to manage.

Dramallama91 · 02/12/2024 08:31

My DD is similar, she has a double crown right at the back of her head and it all grows forward! I gave up and had the forward facing hair cut into a fringe and the rest is shoulder/bob length. It seems that's how it's naturally meant to be (and I think a bob is adorable on a toddler!)

Thanks for taking the time to comment and share advice, it means a lot.
Taking it all as homework over the Christmas break, while there's less time pressure xx

Maybe another month or two before a haircut, so i have a bit of length to experiment with.

And agree that mostly it can be out & natural (esp when i start using organic coconut oil), except when it needs taming due to either Bad Hair Day or nice outfit day
