Leaving a sleeping child in the car

After discussing this with my SIL, I'd be interested in hearing other peoples views on this...

Would you leave a child (yours or one you were looking after) sleeping in the car?

Mine - depends where the car was.

NO

My friend regularly leaves her lo parked on the road outside while she keeps an eye from the window. Personally, I stay in the car - I have a book tucked away for such times!

thisisyesterday · 28/04/2008 19:45

yes. I have on many occasions.

not at my house though, because I have to park on the road. but I do at my mum's because she lives in a very quiet road and has a drive and I can see ds's from the front window.

depends what you mean by 'leave'

i occasionally leave mine asleep in the car, on the drive where i can see them. i would never leave them out of my sight. more often than not i go into the house, get my book and go and sit in the car with them, and enjoy the half hour of peace and quiet!

janeite · 28/04/2008 19:47

No. In fact, I knocked on soembody's door once because the car was parked on a busy road, with a toddler and a baby asleep inside. Agonised over whether to just walk away and decided I couldn't live with myself if anything had happened. They were v nice about it and said they'd go out to them immediately.

I left mine in the car when it was parked outside our garage, which was at the back of house. Often.

Seona1973 · 28/04/2008 19:50

I do if they are on our drive as you can see them from the living room window. If we cant get close enough I take the monitor out of ds's room and put it in the car so we hear when they wake. I have done it at my mums too although they have to park at the kerb there but I can see them from the window and have a peek at them every couple of minutes.

I do when the car is parked in our drive and I can see it from our kitchen window. I wouldn't otherwise. But I'm a bit neurotic like that.

keevamum · 28/04/2008 19:54

I do it quite a lot....but park on the drive in front of my house and then either sit in the car or perch on the sofa inside to get a good view of sleeping babe with the laptop on ....Obviously when it gets warmer in the summer I don't do it as I don't know how hot it gets inside....Would never leave anyone else's though.

janeite · 28/04/2008 19:55

Different on a drive to my example I think - it was a very busy road, a very hot day and the windows were all closed too.

I have, not when they were young babies but from the age of 1 I left my DD1 asleep on the drive (used to live in Wales in a gated estate so it was very very safe) and also have left her asleep on my mum's drive (have shut and locked her gates) and then sat in the window with a cup of tea and magazine and kept an eye on her. I would NEVER leave a child in a car outside on the road or whilst I popped into the shop though.

My DD does literally explode if woken up - but I would never leave her asleep in the car on a warm day.

ditto, if my choice is waking the baby who will then grizzle all afternoon, or leaving him sleeping safely in the car then I'd do that.

lizziemun · 28/04/2008 20:07

No, even on my drive. I live in a close of just 5 houses and we live in the house right at the end.

Nope never, it has never entered my head to either.

MadamePlatypus · 28/04/2008 20:14

No. Would perhaps run in to house to get a book, but would always stay with child. In fact, I have usually planned that DD will fall asleep in the car and have knitting/ipod/book with me. You can even get broadband from the car. Why would you go in the house? There is usually some JOB THAT SHOULD BE DONE in the house. Car much nicer.

If DS was with me/visiting friends and DD had fallen asleep would just take her inside and forget about nap.

thisisyesterday · 28/04/2008 20:16

too right hatrick. I think if people had our babies they'd definitely leave them in the car as much as poss.
I want to leave mine in the car when they're awake to be quite honest!

why go into the house? because I usually have one child asleep and one awake. if I stay in the car then the awake child wakes the sleeping one.
plus, I want to have a cup of coffee and a sit down.
and if I wake the sleeping baby it is NOT NICE
