3 month old - normal activity levels

Hi everyone,

My 12 week has been diagnosed with hypotonia (low muscle tone) and we are awaiting possible further testing etc. She hates tummy time and won't lift her head/bear any weight on her arms during it but it's starting to get better head control if held in a sitting position but still a bit bobble - headed.

My question is, what level of activity is normal for a normally developing baby when on a play mat etc? Most of the time my little one will wave her arms/play with her hands and kick her legs but sometimes she will just lie there and watch me or look around the room. .
She hates being examined at the paediatrician so is never super happy or active there (plus half the time she's fallen asleep on the journey in and has to be woken up or is due a feed) so she's never kicking and waving on the examination table. The doctor made it seem like babies should be constantly active when awake, but surely sometimes they just want to look around the room or have a rest? Is this normal?

I can only speak for my own baby, she’s 7 months now but when she was 3 months she was really active I’d say, looked back through my videos to see. Even when she was looking around the room or watching me she was almost always moving in some way, waving her arms, playing with her hands, reaching around, moving her legs etc. It was very rare (and still is very rare) that she would ever be lying down completely still not moving at all if she was awake. She would look around or watch me but would still also be moving in some way

Sorry you're going through this. I echo the other poster. My 2 month old is almost always moving arms/legs if awake. Only if he is really chill and about to fall asleep does he lie still. On the play mat, when I'm holding him, or on changing mat he usually jiggles his arms and legs around and turns his head. He saw the doctor today for a weigh and jabs and was cross at the dr but very much tensed / shook his arms and legs. Hope you get some answers for your baby.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but how is your daughter @GreenFlamingo11 now? We’re going through same thing.

Hello! Sorry you are going through something similar.
She is 17 months old now and a livewire! Still has some hypotonia (core mainly) but has improved massively with regular physio and just normal getting a bit older and stronger. She has just begun walking independently and can bum shuffle at an alarming speed. All her other development is normal, and she has not been diagnosed with anything in conjunction with the hypotonia.
You can PM me if you would like.
