DS turned 6 last week. He was toilet/potty trained at 3 and overnight shortly thereafter. He had a wee accident every week or two for a year or so but thereafter it was quite rare. Never had a poo accident. Last year he experienced some bullying in school and we noticed he began to have accidents again. We’ve been to the GP multiple times and ruled out any physical cause (including encoparaesis). We are awaiting a referral to a child psychologist as he has become quite fearful and timid since the bullying and I suspect that may be related but also wonder whether there is something else at play.
We go a week or so without anything and then this weekend we’ve had two wee accidents each day. I am worried that it’s becoming ingrained in him, this afternoon for example he was playing with a new toy he received for his bday and didn’t want to stop so began leaking into his trousers. We don’t scold him but also I don’t think this is appropriate at this age? I really have to pry him away from the toy and I see that he is also ashamed that it has happened and doesn’t want to show me. (He is our first but I thought this would be over by now?). I am also concerned this will lead to more bullying at school. He sometimes also has poo accidents (which also never happened prior to the bullying) and I am beside myself trying to help him (and also doing the washing every couple of days).
We do try to have a very routine schedule (every 2-3 hours trying) but it doesn’t seem to help. Also the accidents never happen at night, which makes me think it’s more conscious/behavioural? I don’t know if I should try to obtain a referral to a paediatric urologist or gastroenterologist? Or someone else? Please any suggestions appreciated, I am at the end of my tether with this and don’t know how to help DS.
