Child suddenly crying at school drop off

Really looking for some advice.

My DS started school in August, from day one he was great. Went in with no fuss, ran in every day actually!

This week, his best friend got upset going into school for some reason, this set my DS off. Now he is crying every morning going in.

I have gently asked him if everything is ok in school. He has quite a few friends and has struck up a close friendship with three other boys. He is adamant that no-one is being mean to him, calling him names or leaving him out. He is pretty good at telling me when someone is naughty etc.

He said he cries because he misses me. The teach says that once in class he is fine.

What do i do here? He's not hysterical (yet) but how do I get him back to where he was?

It was all gong so well. My eldest DS has always went into school fine so this is new for me.

Please help!

It’s very normal. Just reassure him, give him a cuddle, say see you at home time and pass him off to an adult for support. It just sounds like the novelty has worn off and he’s a bit emotional about it. My youngest is in Y2 and has only just stopped crying at drop off! Two years later. But there are absolutely children who still get upset into Y2/3. It’s normal. Just be kind and reassuring but breezily wave him off.

Thanks for your reply.

That actually makes me feel better. He used to do the same at nursery on and off so when he settled well at school I was so relieved. Then it felt like this came out of nowhere.

I’m hoping it passes soon. It’s a horrible feeling leaving them isn’t it?
