HELP Child undoing car seat buckle!

My 4 year old has started undoing the buckle of his rear facing car seat harness and I don't know how to stop him! He didn't on a motorway today!

I have a clip that stops him slipping his arms out but that doesn't help with this problem.

Are the any devices out there that can stop this please?!

I have explained to him that's it's dangerous and he seemed shocked to be told off but I just can't trust him.

I haven't manged to find anything. As my 2 year olds do this too. Luckily they haven't yet done it whilst driving (yet). But they find it hilarious to do it whilst trying to get them into the car. As they are with twins I end up chasing them both around the car (I feel lile I'm in a Tom and Jerry Sketch!) So any reccomendations I would he interested too

It's a real problem isn't it?! My LO did it really quietly on a very busy road, scared the life out of me when I saw what he had done. Went with a rear facing seat for the extra safety and now I have to worry about him unbuckling! Nightmare. Hoping that someone in here might know something we don't and can recommend a solution! X

I wish I knew! My nearly two year old kept doing this and last week within the space of driving for ten minutes, he done it 3 times. I've now caved and bought a new car seat.

Bizarrely this is one of the problems I never had. The lock on mine was super stiff, I could barely undo it

I think you need a different car seat. My car seat was hard for me to undo, my dc would never have been able to

This any good?

I have heard of people putting the rough side of Velcro on the button to deter them pushing as it won’t feel nice

I used to tell my kids that the car couldn't go if their seatbelt was unbuckled- and if they undid it while I was driving, I'd pull over and turn the car off.
Only had to do it twice, then they believed me.

As he's 4 and this is something that could literally kill him have you considered a) getting really angry with him and b) punishment? Because if he's nt (and even possibly if he isnt) he's old enough to understand that some things are absolutely forbidden.

At age 4 (assuming no SN) behavioural methods are absolutely an option so definitely try this. You can try carrot rather than stick if you prefer - offer some minor reward for good behaviour in the car.

One thing which helped my eldest was to explain to him that yes, he could open the seatbelt, but it was a very serious, very grown up responsibility and I could only trust him to do it if he waited until we were totally stopped AND he had heard the safety word from a grown up. Otherwise, he wouldn't be allowed to do it himself. Then we praised him loads when he did it right - this totally solved it and he didn't open it too early after that.

(The logic that he had already done it without being allowed, and we couldn't physically stop him from doing so somehow did not occur to him. I am not sure what we would have done if he had worked that out!)

I’m afraid I found a video screen package worked after nothing else did

Is it uncomfortable and he just hasn’t explained it? One of mine did this and I changed him into a HBB and he never did it again. Turned out the straps were digging into his crotch.
