I have to cater for a vegan kid, can anyone tell me what are the best sweets/cookies/biscuits/crisps? And where I I could get a vegan cupcake or something in place of a slice of birthday cake? Thanks!

Party rings, Oreo’s, pink wafers, Jelly tots, fruit pastilles, starburst, fruitella, a lot of swizzles sweets. Asda and Sainsburys usually have little Oggs cakes. Ready salted crisps inc Pom bears are all usually vegan, as are many salt and vinegar ones but not Pringles. Skips are vegan.

Thanks so much, this is so helpful! Is there a better vegan sandwich filling other than hummus? And is all bread vegan? I am so ignorant!

Standard kingsmill, hovis, warburtons etc is vegan. Some rolls like brioche etc mostly are not.

Peanut butter is our go to filling but I appreciate that’s not good for allergies, wowbutter if you can get it can be a good alternative. Also an oldie but a goodie is jam. Violife cream cheese is also very plain and inoffensive unlike some stronger vegan cheeses, or the plant based Philadelphia is good.

You can also get mini vegetarian sausage rolls in most supermarkets and all the ones I have seen have been vegan too.

Thank you for catering for them btw but if there’s anything you don’t want to spend the extra on I’m sure you could say to the vegan parents and they could bring something. I usually bring my own cupcakes to parties for my daughter.

All bread isn't vegan. Best to check the ingredients. You can get plant based cheese, falafel could be an alternative or an addition to hummous.
Breadsticks can be good but again need to check ingredients as some do contain milk.

Maybe ask favourite sandwich filling if there’s just one of them? No point going all out and they don’t like the one you choose!

My daughter isn't vegan but is dairy and egg free. Oggs cupcakes are brilliant and most supermarkets sell them. They also freeze really well and defrost in a minute or two if the rest don't get eaten. I have a reliable dairy and egg free recipe if you are baking

Moo free chocolate is good.

Jammie dodgers, bourbons plus some other "normal" biscuits are dairy and egg free.

I can't remember if harribo giant strawberries are vegan but the definitely don't have gelatine in -my daughter has a beef allergy so can't have gelatine and she can have them and the mini giant strawberries

Ask mum for preferred sandwich fillings. Pure, flora and vitalite are nice margarine but often the budget ones are dairy free.

Ask mum if there's anything else and make sure you have factored in everything. I always make sure I have mini chocolate and sweets having been caught out by a surprise pinata that I wasn't forewarned about! They seem to forget that when I ask about what food I need to bring so my daughter isn't left out!

Another vote for the oggs mini cupcakes

Also the Tesco plant chef frozen mini sausage rolls are really good - I'm sure there is other plant chef party food I've not tried too

Marmite sandwiches or marmite and cucumber
Avocado
Tomato

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 28/10/2024 16:57

Bagels and vegan cream cheese. A plain one like violife or vegan philidephia (vegan philidephia made of almonds though if any nut allergies).

Moat bread is vegan in the UK. Loads is marked as such too.

The suggestions of marmite/hummus/falafel are not ideal if a young child. You can get vegan sausage rolls in the meat free section. The quorn ones have egg in, think its linda mccartney ones. You cna also get vegan babybel.

Make sure there's veg with cucumber etc. Pom bears, party rings, jammy dodgers.

We often get given the asda mini caterpiller cakes from asda as a vegan birthday cake alternative. Fun and vegan.

Oggs are in most supermarkets now and have cupcakes and mini cakes.

The Quorn frozen mini sausage rolls are vegan, but I think you’re right for some reason the chilled ones aren’t.

I would steer clear of cheese. I have yet to find a nice tasting vegan cheese. They all smell like feet!

StillAtTheRestaurant · 28/10/2024 18:51

A lot of the jelly sweets from M&S such as Percy Pigs and Colin the Caterpillar are vegan. Check the packets as they are clearly marked that they're vegan.

BenditlikeBridget · 28/10/2024 18:58

Vegan cheese is all minging.

For a young child i’d do one little hummus and one little jam sandwich, and then crisps, vegan sausage rolls, biscuits, sweets and cakes as above.

BenditlikeBridget · 28/10/2024 18:58

If your budget allows, M&S Plant Kitchen range is the best i’ve found generally.
