Social interaction concerns

Hello everyone! I've found Mumsnet incredibly helpful and reassuring in the past, so I wondered if I could have some thoughts on my DS. I'm not sure if his social interaction is where it should be.

My DS is 13 months. He babbles a lot, both vowel "ah ah" sounds and consonant babbles. He also copies our sounds, including our laughs! He understands some instructions such as "Turn the page" and "Come here", with and without visual cues.

In many ways, he is incredibly sociable. He smiles all the time, looks for preferred family members and his key worker at nursery and will crawl over to us and climb up us when he wants to be picked up/when he wants something. He does show joint attention too, for example he checks we're watching before he throws things on the floor from his high chair!

But...he isn't showing us his toys, or offering them to us. He enjoys games like "Peekaboo" and "Wind the bobbin up" but he doesn't try and join in for himself. He's usually the sort of child you'd describe as "into everything", but in this sense he seems quite passive. He doesn't have any words yet either.

What do you think? I wasn't worried about his development, until my friend posted on Facebook that her 11 month old was doing all of these things and it really got to me! He does go to nursery twice a week and they haven't expressed any concern, but I can't help but worry.

Thanks x

He sounds completely normal. I don’t think many of those things would be expected of the average 11 month old. Some people like to exaggerate though.

Has he had his 12 month check yet and did the HV use the 12 month Ages & Stages?

He sounds completely normal, if not advanced for a 13 month old.

Yes he has. The health visitor did say he scored a little low in the problem-solving and personal social categories, but she wasn't overly concerned. She's just going to ring us in a month or two to see how he's getting on.

I think the Ages & Stages are designed so that most babies will score grey in a couple of areas so he sounds completely normal. I do think that the HV is doing the right thing though on doing a follow up.

The next Ages & Stages is the 16 month one so if you're still concerned when he's reached 16 months, maybe fill in that one? Don't do it before though as you'll drive your self mad Wink
