My 9 month old got really angry

I was just changing my babys nappy on her changing mat and she kept twisting her body over and over to lie on her front. So I've said "NO" in a serious voice

My baby has grabbed my face with both her hands and dug her nails into me without letting go and started really high pitch screeching, her whole face wen red and she was shaking. She was clearly VERY angry.

Is this normal for this age, I had no idea babys got angry like that. Its more the fact that she wanted to hurt me aswell, I'd annoyed her that much that she wanted to hurt me

Yes it can be normal when they talk early (or are about to start).

HappyDane · 18/10/2024 11:24

Yes it's quite normal.

She could have been cold, uncomfortable, sore, maybe, but I doubt angry, in the sense we understand it as adults. I really don't think she was trying to hurt you, ie, punish you as a result of 'anger', 'resentment'.
Their little brains are simply not mature enough at 9 months to process the consequence of that emotion.

It's also not necessarily that she wanted to hurt you - it's just as likely she acted without intent. The body does what the body wants to do - it's primal and instinctual.

Exactly. Babies are creatures of instinct. They're surprisingly strong for their size as a result. My DC2 was like this, and started tantrumming at about the same age too. He's a heart on his sleeve kind of child, very emotional.

Yeah she just had a point to make and doesn’t have the vocab yet thats all. She cant understand why you wont let her go on her front

ThePoetsWife · 18/10/2024 14:39

It's frustration rather than anger

BarbaraHoward · 18/10/2024 14:41

Yes normal. I doubt she wanted to hurt you - she probably doesn't really have any understanding that you're a person yet, or that you can feel pain or that she can cause it. She just felt your cheeks were excellent for taking out her frustration! Bloody hurts doesn't it.
