HELP

Right, my daughter had her ears pierced in August (she's 5) I cleaned them 3 times a day for about 7/8 weeks and all was good. She's complained that one ear was painful occasionally when I asked her to twist them but nothing major and it looks fine!!! Tonight she's been to gymnastics where she had to take them out which was a big issue for her but they looked fine apart from the back of one of them which looked red. She was really panicky about putting either of them back in but one's gone back fine and the other not so.

It's got through half fine, but struggling to get it back through and looks red and sore at the back. Iv then moved it around and made it bleed 🥴🥴🥴🥴. Lots of tears and she's told me this ear really hurts, now it's bled she's completely shut down. Now gone to bed and agreed to re try tomorrow but I'm worried it's a no go. Help.

This happened to my dd. I don’t think you’ll get it back in now because it will be inflamed and scabbed. We had to wait for it to completely heal up, with no lump, and then have it repierced.

Strictlymad · 15/10/2024 20:26

I wouldn’t force her, if she wants to leave them out and let it heal over that’s her choice. If she does want them back in I’d make sure it was all incredibly clean, any issue with reddness swelling or warm to touch is sign of infection.^^

TeenLifeMum · 15/10/2024 20:26

Take them out, let them heal and let her decide whether to do it again when she’s much older. Why make your dc put up with pain for “beauty”? Really can’t understand why you’re even asking.

This happened to my cartilage piercing last year when the bar fell out, I couldn't get it through, I just went back to the piercer who popped it back in for me.

DeliciousApples · 15/10/2024 20:33

You can't take earrings out at first. You just put exercise tape over them so they can't get caught.

The old method was ice cube and push it through. I'd faint with the pain though so not for me....

LoveIsleOfWight · 15/10/2024 20:33

Happened to dd last year

We were told a new earing had to go in immediately or not at all as it would scab over if allowed to dry

Sillysausage76 · 15/10/2024 20:35

We had to go in from the back but ds older

sanityisamyth · 15/10/2024 20:39

A five year old doesn't need pierced ears. Take them both out and let them heal. If she wants them pierced when she's old enough to understand the implications, fine.

InTheRainOnATrain · 15/10/2024 20:41

This is why it’s sometimes best to wait until they’re older as this can happen and you have to get it back through immediately, usually by going in through the back first and then putting it back in normally, but they have to sit still and let you do it. I still remember it happening to me and the tears and I was 8! If you’ve left it out overnight then likely that you’ll have to let it heal then see if she wants it repierced.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 15/10/2024 20:42

The new advice is not to twist them until fully healed, but I found that even after 10 weeks dd's weren't fully healed.

It sounds like she has one that has become infected unfortunately.

I would use salon to try and prevent further infection and speak to the piercer assuming it wasn't the likes of claire's for advice.

ItTook9Years · 15/10/2024 20:43

You’re not supposed to clean or twist earrings whilst they are healing, which can take 3 months.

I’d take them out and get them redone when she is 8-10 (the minimum age a proper piercer will do them).

Timeforaglassofwine · 15/10/2024 20:48

This is why I made my dd wait until she was 10, she was old enough to handle the pain of issues and keep the piercings clean herself. Take them both out of and let her have them redone when she's older. If the swelling or redness continues then see a pharmacist. If she becomes unwell, seek medical advice.

I really do not understand why people feel the need to judge when they don't know the situation ... for 2 years I had tears about my DD wanting her ears pierced and we waited until we thought she would understand how important it is not to touch and clean them. It was FULLY her decision, I actually asked her not to have them done but it was something she really wanted and all she asked for as a birthday present. So leave the judgement please!

I thought about doing this. She's asleep now.

So hard because she really wants the earrings back in but doesn't want the pain! Wish I stuck to my guns and made her wait ... looks like it might be a heal over situation.

We had this when DD was 8, the advice that they're fully healed by six weeks is not true for all and when they had to start coming out for PE in Primary three times a week we ran into real problems.
We persevered for three months then had to let them go.
She's just had them re done (at the start of the hols) at age 13 where secondary school will let you cover them with tape.
They are not coming out any time soon!

She’s 5! Of course people will judge. I wasn’t actually judging the fact you pierced her ears, I was judging the fact you needed to ask random strangers on the internet what to do rather than make the obvious decision to stop hurting your 5 year old by trying to force a bit of metal through her sore ear.

My dd (a young adult) had hers pierced a couple of years ago with a needle and we were both surprised at how long it took until they were healed, I think it was about a year before they were completely healed. If you had them done in a piercing/ tattoo place, you could go back and ask for advise. My dd went to a different piercing place after about six months as she was having trouble taking her piercing out and the lady said it still wasn’t healed.

Ahhhh no!! She's going to be so upset in the morning. I wonder if she will insist on leaving the one in that's fine.

Thank you

Really!! We were told to turn once a day and clean 3 times a day .... they were fine but this seems to be the turning point.

I think if this is it, I'll be waiting until she's 14+

I had this with my DD's, I bought some titanium studs, cleansed the area where the hole is (with micellar water) and managed to get the new studs in without much bother. Then I just twisted and cleansed every morning and night. There fine now and she can go a week without wearing any earrings - they don't heal up.

Just be careful when putting the earrings back in on the ear that's sore, you may have to go through the back.

Oh ok! This gives me hope.

I'm nervous because both options are going to be tears tomorrow!! Wish I didn't take them out 🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴

My DD is soooo happy about having her ears pierced I think the fall out of her having to have them out will be major. So fingers crossed you're right xx

If you've been given poor after care advice (the twisting) I'd also be questioning the quality of the earrings etc. it might be worth seeking the opinion of a professional piercer, they might be able to taper them back open and fit titanium flat backed jewellery which will give them the best chance of healing.

Sorry... you ASKED a 5 year old not to have her ears pierced?
Good luck saying no to ANYTHING when she is 15!!

dementedpixie · 15/10/2024 21:22

Don't turn the earrings. Each time you do it you are setting back the healing process. I'm not sure you need to clean 3 times a day either.
