Cot refusal

Hi,
I’m really struggling to get my baby to sleep in their own bed or anywhere else other than on me or my husband.
My baby has just turned 5 months and we started experiencing cot refusal and frequent waking from about 3.5 months.
Their sleep has been very up and down over the last few months where at times it seems to be getting better - they managed to fall asleep on their own a couple of times and we were getting longer stretches (still only 3 hours.)
However, recently my baby is becomming almost impossible to put down in their own bed for naps and nighttime. When we do get them down they wake 45-1 hour and after 1am it’s even more frequent. I have tried co sleeping but they will only fall asleep if they are still physically on me some way (head on my arm). I therefore cannot sleep because I’m worried about it being unsafe and any movement from me wakes them and results in hysterical crying.
I have tried letting them cry for a bit and putting them in their bed drowsy but they become so agitated and upset.

I really don’t know what to do.

What does a typical routine look like for a 5 month old?
I have had days where they are getting a good amount of day time sleep, sticking to wake windows etc and then days where it’s all gone out the window and it doesn’t seem to have any impact on their nighttime sleep.

Sorry for all the information I just really needed an output.
Looking for any advice or just to hear if anyone else is in the same boat.
