Toddlers in food part of trolly

I don't understand why parents of toddlers and young children think it's acceptable to allow their offspring to stand/sit in the food area of a trolly . This is where my food goes, and I really don't want to put my food where dirty little shoes have been, it's disgusting, you wouldn't put your shopping loose on a dirty pavement so why on earth allow shoes in a trolly, what if they've stood in dog poo?. Put your kids in the seat part, or if there to big ,make them walk and control them.

I do this, my son is 3 and has autism and will happily sit in the back of the trolley with a few books to read through and he doesn't stand up (if he did I wouldn't allow it, purely for his own safety), however he will absolutely not sit in the seat part without screaming bloody murder, even with books.
If I put my phone on and let him watch youtube he would maybe sit in the seat part but then you'd probably judge me for that too...
As far as controlling him outside of the trolley, I'm guessing you've never had to deal with an overwhelmed, nuerodivergent child in a busy supermarket.
The trolleys are dirty anyway, like you point out, there's much, much worse that sees the bottom of a trolley than the seat of my 3 year olds pants so if you're that bothered, just scan and go and use your bags. I'd recommend anti bac-ing your counters on a regular basis if it's something that you worry about, even if you were using a trolley which hadn't been filthied by a dirty child and their bad parent.

Never assume anything, my 2 nd child is autistic, only used echoalia till she was five, couldn't even ask for a drink of juice when she was a toddler. I always made the effort to hold her hand and engage her with shopping or if she was tired let her ride in the seat. It was hard work and effort. I'm not a saint and I'm not a martyr, just doing my job after choosing to be a parent

I do this with my toddler - however I take their shoes off and put a fleece blanket down first before they sit inside (more to protect them tbh!). Really cannot see the issue - however must add I do have a child that sits nicely, I wouldn't have risked it with my first as she was like baby satan at that age and would have stood up/caused mayhem!

Why dont you use the seat on the trolly provided specifically for this

WetBandits · 08/10/2024 16:37

Trolleys? As in the ones that are kept outdoors?

Do you think supermarket employees lovingly sterilise each trolley at the end of the day? Confused

However, I would bet my house that the handle of a trolley is far filthier than the basket…

I don’t because I have two children.

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 16:42

@WetBandits like I said, it being filthy doesn't mean it's fine to make it worse

ouch321 · 08/10/2024 16:50

It's disgusting but people on Mumsnet can often be quite filthy.
And as for the crap spouted... first trollies aren't always kept outside, at my nearest supermarket, they are stored in a huge lobby or the underground so they're never out in the open but second even if they were it's not great them getting rained on but that's better than the faeces, urine, phlegm etc that is on the pavements that your precious then treads over the base of the trolley. Plus if you go to Tesco they no longer give out the little bags for fruit and veg so if you don't want to buy a full box of tomatoes let's say, you have to buy them singly and put them loose in the trolley with nothing to protect them from the grime that's now there from the skanky shoes. Also hate it when people put their two wheeled shopping bags inside the trolley. Equally disgusting

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 15:09

"It's filthy so it's fine"

"Everyone else litters so why does it matter if I do it?"

Not all food is in packets. A lot of supermarkets have stopped doing bags for their veg now, and I also don't want to be touching packets that are covered in the dirt off the bottom of kids' shoes to then spread it all over the car, house, kitchen, before putting it away.

Unless you're suggesting people wash their packets as they put them in the car?

Yes if they are that worried.

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 08/10/2024 17:04

I mean I wouldn’t let my child do it, as much for safety as anything. But a supermarket in our town had a police presence for a while, after it transpired lads were making a game / dare of urinating against the trolleys. I’ve also seen a man literally spit on them as he passed. Even without little feet, trolleys are pretty grim. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to start thinking about how dirty they are, you’ll never want to use them again.

italianlondongirl · 08/10/2024 17:04

But surely there's a difference between a trolley being a bit dusty/grimy and a trolley that could have dog poo on it.

Yes I clean counters but don't expect anything really nasty to be on them.

It's like parents who are toilet training and allow their bare bottomed kids to sit on counters in cafes.

But this, like the recent dog thread will be divisive.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 08/10/2024 17:06

I don't think they should be there for safety reasons but the hygiene argument always makes me 🤣. If you think a trolley is clean and food safe you are greatly mistaken.

user2848502016 · 08/10/2024 17:06

I wouldn't eat something that had been directly in a supermarket trolley though! Supermarket trolleys are never washed, they must be filthy!
Everything is either in packaging,
Cooked or washed before eating anyway.
And no I didn't make a habit out of putting my toddlers in the trolley but I have done it before when my younger DD was a toddler, very tall for her age, and I found it pretty much impossible to get her in to the trolley seat if she didn't want to get in, so dumping her in the actual trolley was the best I could come up with at times if she was playing up (as in being a normal toddler).
Shopping with toddlers is hard work why not give parents a break!

Viviennemary · 08/10/2024 17:08

Most food is wrapped. I thought I was fussy but I can' t see the issue here.

Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumcanihaveasnack · 08/10/2024 17:10

Yabu.

your probably the same person who groans at kids wondering about in supermarkets.
kids don’t like food shopping. It’s boring or they are little and tired. Putting them in the trolly is less stress for everyone involved.

unless your licking your food packets then it’s really a non issue. You realise the trollies are not clean anyway and stay outside right? The food packets have crossed through how many warehouses and sets of hand before they reach the shelf,

you need to relax a little. I can’t imagine getting upset about this

SatinHeart · 08/10/2024 17:13

I wouldn't do it because it's unsafe and I don't want DC mucking about with the items I intend to buy.

The trolley will had had had raw meat packets (which do on occasion leak) etc in the bottom of it so I don't believe it's a massive hygiene issue tbh.

Donimo · 08/10/2024 17:53

I have 3 young children. Often trolleys only have 1 seat in them. And never more then 2. So only way I can shop is have 1 in the trolley

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/10/2024 17:56

Yournevertooldtolovehamsters · 08/10/2024 15:19

I put the packets on my worktops and cupboards. I've seen a shitty shoe on a toddler in a trolly, gross

Think of how many hands those packets have touched before yours, not to mention warehouse floors where feet have walked, lorry containers etc. I wouldn't be remotely bothered about a toddler being in the trolley.

DinoNuggetsRUs · 08/10/2024 18:14

Tbh the comment about your second child having autism makes it worse in my eyes, how is it possible to have gone through similar struggles (albeit no 2 children with autism are the same) and STILL be so judgemental.

You can 'engage' and talk to some children all you want and it won't stop them kicking and screaming and quite literally pulling your hair out.

I tend to just mind my own business in situations such as these, the trolleys are already disgusting and you have no idea what kind of day the person pushing it has already had.

DreamingDreaming · 08/10/2024 18:17

Why did you quote the whole OP?

@TheShellBeach why do you say this so often? 🤣

DreamingDreaming · 08/10/2024 18:21

I did if when my kids were little. It was convenient and made shopping easier.

A trolley is hardly sterile/clean so not worth worrying about.

I'm assuming because it gets no less irritating when people continue to do it.

DreamingDreaming · 08/10/2024 18:25

You should both probably watch your blood pressure and go and meditate or something if you get irritated by something so minor. You have to scroll anyway, it doesn't make much difference. 🤣

Tittat50 · 08/10/2024 18:25

There were times when kids were young that I didn't have much choice but to. It's the biggest non issue really. I'd expect the trolley to be unhygienic anyway with or without kids in them.

Maybe think about all the shitty nails and piss stained fingers touching food, included fruits and veg from unwashed hands. 🤷‍♀️

Bananalanacake · 08/10/2024 18:29

I was putting stuff on the belt in LIDL, my DD was sitting in the trolley seat (where they're supposed to sit). The trolley was in front of me next to the cashier, I looked up and she was standing up ON the seat, thankfully a close by lady picked her up before she could leap out. I paid more attention to her next time.

ohthejoys21 · 08/10/2024 18:30

It's disgusting op, that toddler could've just been toddling in dog shit and I'm expected to put unwrapped loose produce there? Not just grim, dangerous.

I always used to do this when my children were young. Trolleys aren't that clean anyway and having seen how food is stored in warehouses, a child in a trolley should be the least of your concerns.
