Newborn nail issue

I have just noticed my 2 week olds fingernail looks sore, she gets lots of hangnails but I left them alone as didn't want to cause an infection or anything and it seems one has got caught and now looks like this? Has anyone had this? Not sure what to do!

I have used a baby electric nail file to trim her nails last week as they were so long when she was born. (The photo makes it look like I'm squeezing her hand but I promise I wasn't she just had cold hands!)

Thanks

Unless it's the picture that finger looks very swollen. I would take her to get checked out by a doctor asap.

Yep it is a bit swollen will take her to the maternity hospital for them to check it out. Feel awful I didn't see it before hope it hasn't been like this long!

I hope they see you quickly and she is ok

Poor wee mite, that does look very swollen & infected.

I have a treasured tube of the old style Germolene 'magic cream' I'd have put a dab on, civered it with a plaster and put a cotton mit over the top (just in the unlikely event of her finding her mouth.

But A&E if you were worried was fine, they'll be happy to have a look at it.

Hope they see you soon & you can get home & back to bed quickly.

Aww that does look sore 😢 poor baba. Please let us know how she gets on x

itsme189 · 06/10/2024 06:09

We are home given some antibiotics to collect at 10am but she is otherwise well! Spoke to 111 in the end and they sent us to out of hours at the hospital. Thanks again and if anyone else experiences this make sure to get it checked as it can get bad quickly apparently lucky that wasn't the case for us!

My newborn had this down her fingernail too, I forget the name for it, we managed with just a warm cloth on it and fucidin cream from Gp. Glad she’s ok.

My daughter had sometting very similar when she was very small aswell, her finger was swollen and had puss also. took her to doctor and they gave fucidin cream and it cleared up!

Blue2020 · 07/10/2024 08:16

My son had this at 4 weeks old (was born 5 weeks early too) and a doctor prescribed him antibiotics. I felt guilty wondering how long I had missed it for.

His finger improved and it went away. He’s had no more infections with his fingers since then and he’s now 18 months old.
