ASD Assessment Outcomes: Has Anyone Not Received a Diagnosis?

Did you pursue an ASD assessment for your child, and was the outcome that they did not qualify for a diagnosis? If so, what were the initial concerns, and what factors led the assessment team to determine that the child did not meet the criteria for a diagnosis?

My oldest was assessed at 7, on the advice of the paediatrician. We pursued an assessment for adhd and on our first appt we were told he probably also had asd. After the multi disciplinary assessment he was not diagnosed with asd. 2 years later we had him reassessed and the team were scratching their heads not understanding how the initial team missed it!

Yes, we did. Ds1 was referred at age 3, seen aged 4. As part of the assessment the Dr observed him at school. Ds1 cheerfully chatted to the Dr and introduced her to all his new "friends". Unfortunately the Dr didn't ask him if he knew what a friend was. If she had, she would have found out that ds1 thought that if someone was in his class at school then they were his friend.

We were told ds1 didn't have autism. We disagreed so we just treated him as if he had it and resigned ourselves to the fact that we would be dealing with this on our own. I joined various online forums, including mumsnet and read up on autism. Then years later on of ds1's teachers asked us at parents evening if we had considered that he might have autism. So he was referred for another assessment and this time he was diagnosed aged 9.

@LoveSandbanks Was your son showing signs earlier on? Or is that something that became obvious later on in school? If yes, what did you notice around the age of 3? And have certain things improved over time?

My child was assessed and diagnosed with autism just before their 7th birthday.

Also assessed for ADHD but not diagnosed. I do still suspect it though.
