Great present needed for 4 YO boy for under £10- what would yours like?

My DD has a very close friend whose b'day is coming up. His mum always offers v thoughtful gifts and I would like to get him something he'd really like while not spending more than the tacitly acceptable level!

I have two girls and little idea what specific stuff boys are into at 4. His mum is not keen on Power Rangers type stuff and I have given him 'unisex' stuff like gardening sets for Christmas and previous b'days.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

You can get good lego sets for under £10. Or Kid K'nex is good. I recently got a 4 year old boy one of those bug examining boxes and some pretend bugs, just in case he didn't fancy collecting real ones!

SoupKitchen · 21/04/2008 13:37

Playmobil add on set
They are also doing some new carry along boxes for about a tenner

DS (4.5) just got one of these bargain! and connects with normal lego too. Money left over from a tenner to buy a book or something too!

tiredlady · 21/04/2008 13:46

Kid KNex

swampster · 21/04/2008 13:49

DS1 got tiddlywinks from his best mate for his 4th. Thought it was a slightly odd pressie TBH. Started playing it - first half hour he was very frustrated because he couldn't get the chips in and I could. After that he started beating me... now he wipes the floor with me. AND it is loads of fun to play.

newgirl · 21/04/2008 14:00

oh dressing up stuff! they dont get much of that and at 4 they still like it!

mollymawk · 21/04/2008 14:04

Depends whether you want to get something he would like or something his mother would like him to have
My DS1 likes vehicles of all kinds and would always be delighted with another bendy bus/tractor/fire engine
Jigsaws (with transport-related theme)
Construction things (eg Knex mentioned above)
Plasticine

a torch (I brought a crappy ChupaChup torch & lolly combo back for my 4 year old ds from a recent trip abroad - he was so pleased with it, and still kept thanking me for it days later, aww ) - try to get one you can wind up though or one of those Fisher Price ones that goes off on it's own when it's not being held.

Stomp Rocket!

Dragonbutter · 21/04/2008 15:00

I was just about to say stomp rocket!
The stomp rocket junior has soft foamy rockets.

mollymawk · 21/04/2008 15:07

yes stomp rocket very good idea!

Porpoise · 21/04/2008 15:15

this is always a winner

Pendulum · 21/04/2008 17:46

wow, thanks for all the replies! some great ideas here. he already has a stomp rocket (aren't they fab)

like the building ideas so will look into knex etc (DD likes this too)

think his mum would just like something small and quiet that keeps him occupied for hours (wouldn't we all)

thanks again!

if it's to be quiet, what about simply a silent vehicle, or a box of smaller toy cars.

BibiThree · 21/04/2008 19:36

Those huge dinosaurs from ELC? They are about £6 I think and dd (3) and her best friend (boy) who is 4 love them.

Twiglett · 21/04/2008 19:37

wind-up torch
metal detector

Pendulum · 21/04/2008 22:02

metal detector and giant dinosaurs sound great! he would have to fight me to play with them!

JackieNo · 21/04/2008 22:08

DS had a robot hand for his 4th birthday - loves it. I've seen them in Woolies.

Pendulum · 21/04/2008 22:10

NaughtyNigel · 21/04/2008 22:11

hewlettsdaughter · 21/04/2008 22:12

I'd go for playmobil or lego.
