Nightweaning 14mo help!

My 14 month old has never been a great sleeper and recently it’s gotten worse, sometimes having 3 or 4 bottles of milk a night which I know isn’t great for her. She usually eats pretty well in the day so I’m sure it’s habit rather than hunger.

Last night she went to bed around 7.15pm and woke at 9.50pm which is even earlier than usual. We gave her milk but she wouldn’t settle without a top up and even after that 20 mins later she wanted more. I decided enough was enough and I wasn’t going to give her more and thought I may as well carry on with that for the rest of the night (we tried a gradual approach before which didn’t work so I knew it had to be all or nothing). To my surprise she only cried in my arms for around 10 mins each time but was very restless and it was still a long time of cuddling her before she was fully asleep enough for me to put her back in her cot. The third time she woke at 4.15am and wouldn’t sleep for another 1.5 hours.

This morning I’ve noticed she seems congested and has a runny nose so I’m feeling bad that I started this process when she’s potentially not well without knowing. She seems fine in herself and doesn’t have a temp.

so my questions are… would you continue with the night weaning tonight? Even though she has a cold?

and if you’ve nightweaned at a similar age, how long did it take altogether? did it take ages for them to settle in the night? And did they wake up more to begin with?

I’m just slightly worried in case night weaning ends up making wakes more difficult and longer rather than easier!

Any advice would be gratefully received!

My daughter went through a massive reflux flare up at 13 months and went from drinking 2 x 3-5oz overnight to 5+ 5oz bottles and desperate for more like we hadn't fed her all day. Her reflux was causing her to be in discomfort and feeding soothed it but it was short lived as the feed triggered more reflux and she wanted more milk to ease it. We had to be strict and reduce the amount of milk she was offered and got her reflux meds reviewed. She went back to 2-4oz twice a night and not long after 1 2-4oz bottle.
Colds make my daughters reflux worse

Thanks @Superscientist that sounds so tricky! I don’t think it is reflux as she has always been very up and down with this many bottles in the night and doesn’t have any other symptoms, I think it is more of a habit for her.

I carried on with the nightweaning last night, I was surprised at how short lived the crying was but she was just so restless and making lots of frustrated noises and waking up so much all night. I really hope it settles down, at the moment I just feel like I’ve made a mistake!
