Phenoxymethyl penicillin … bloody awful stuff!!

DD prescribed this for tonsillitis. I cannot get it into her. I have tried reasoning, I have tried forcing it. (She just immediately brings it up) Every time I bring it out she gets distressed which isn’t great on the throat.

she’s barely eating so I can’t disguise it in anything.

Any advice? Pro tips?

also is there some shortage of amoxicillin. It’s the only one that doesn’t taste like crap and when I asked the gp about it he said not for the throat.

But friends have had amoxicillin prescribed for tonsillitis. Have also seen posts here stating same. Confused!

DS had recurrent tonsillitis before he had his tonsils out, and of the 9 bouts he had between 5 and 16 months old, they gave us co-amoxiclav for 5 of them, so it definitely does work, strange for your doctor to say it doesn’t! The others were IV or intra muscular injection due to vomiting the antibiotics and only once were we given the penicillin you have (which he forcefully vomited). No tips here unfortunately other than using a 1ml syringe and doing 0.2ml at a time. When it got to the point of him vomiting it though we always went back to the gp for a different one (and twice ended up admitted to hospital to attempt IV antibiotics, but DS wasn’t even one yet!).

Sorry it’s so hard though so a huge amount of sympathy for you 😞

Thank you so much for your reply.

Just off the phone with OOH and they are giving amoxicillin. Also, GP seeing DS1 as he has just gone downhill in a similar fashion to DD.

im so sorry your DS had such an awful time with his tonsils. And so young. That must have been so scary. ❤️

Ahh I’m so glad they are giving you a different one, it’s absolutely pointless forcing something into a child that won’t take it! And it’s just as traumatising for you as for them I think.

thank you ♥️he had them out 2 months ago and is like a different child, so no regrets whatsoever, and he won’t remember it! But I feel a bit traumatised by it all.

Really hope your DS and DD start to feel better soon, tonsillitis is absolutely horrendous and I don’t think people realise unless they’ve had it, how painful it is just to swallow your own saliva, let lone medicine, food and drink. Sending lots of get well wishes your way!x

How did you get on in the end?

DD was prescribed this 2 nights ago and it's fair to say he hates it. It's utterly miserable giving it to him. Poor guy was thrashing around for a couple of hours last night in digestive discomfort, I think it's the antibiotics. :(

I am sorry your DD is poorly. It’s awful and trying to get that antibiotic in is a nightmare.

I ended up calling out of hours after another failed attempt at getting it into her, she was getting so distressed it wasn’t helping her throat at all. A sympathetic doctor (also a mother of young children) prescribed the banana flavour amoxicillin. DD improved on this course.

I hope you get sorted and your DD starts feeling better soon xx
