6 year old school confidence

Hi all,

My son has just turned 6 at the end of July, so he is one of the youngest in the year just starting year 2. Recently he has been really struggling going in to school in the mornings, he will get to school almost no issues then when he's through the gates he has a meltdown and almost having to drag him through the doors. He seems to lack confidence, and we aren't sure why, we have tried lots of different tactics and read books and advice online. Another thing was at his sports day recently he refused to partake in any of the sports, saying to us he didn't want to lose or wasn't going to be fast enough etc. this is heartbreaking because if he had the confidence he would do amazingly! He is such a creative boy, who everyone says is such a happy kid. It just feels he is scared to give things a try. How can we help him? Especially with getting him confident going into school, that's a real big thing at the moment.
Thank you all for any advice or tips anyone can shed 😊

Make sure you focus on effort and not attainment. Don't praise a good outcome, always praise a good effort. Talk to him about how important trying your best/not giving up is.

Have you spoken to his teachers about school? Any chance he's being bullied/scared of something there?
