18m tantrums with no trigger

My 18 month DD2 is quite a feisty little thing, she knows her own mind and can be grumpy if she doesn't get her own way. This is all fine and feels totally normal but the last couple of days we've had horrific episodes where - with absolutely no warning or obvious trigger - she has gone absolutely mental (for want of a better term!) Screaming like she's in agony, writhing around, won't let us hold or touch her, grabbing and throwing anything within reach. The only thing we've managed to do is to keep her safe and ride it out. The episodes have lasted 15-30mins.

I don't feel like she is in pain, she seems totally fine again once she has calmed down. Our best guess is a simple tantrum (we don't have much experience because DD1 never had them!) but from my understanding they are normally triggered by the child not getting what they want. These tantrums have had no obvious trigger, one even started in the middle of the night!

Can anyone shed some light for me please? I'm feeling quite worried that it's something more sinister (sorry - perpetual catastrophiser! 😖) TIA x
