How do I stay calm?!

I have a three year old DS and a one year old DD. We've worked really hard to get DS to ask for help if DD is toddling over to ruin his game and I supervise them properly e.g. engaged in games and not on my phone. However, recently he's gone back about a million steps and I'm finding it really triggering. He'll poke her in the face, hit me, tell me he wants to kick me and then does.

I'm ashamed to say I've properly shouted at him a few times and moved him away more roughly than I've mean to. This is not who I want to be. How do I stay calm? How do I get him to be less violent? I'm sick of explaining that hitting hurts people, that we won't be able to stay in the park/at our friend's house/softplay if he hits and then I'm sick of following through every single time and having to leave. It's not fair on me, him or my DD. Help!

Give time out as a consequence - put him behind the safety gate for three minutes, or five minutes if you need longer to calm down. Speak quietly and calmly. Praise him for being kind to his little sister every time he is. Will he be in nursery in September?

Yep he gets loads of praise when he gets it right. Yes he'll be starting preschool.
