My DD will eb 5 in May and am planning a party for her at home.

Hopefully the weather will be dry for outdoor games so any ideas on how to keep them all happy please.

Meant to also ask whatsort of things people put in party bags?

Trying to steer clear of putting sweets in so ideas for other things would be appreiciated.

I have loads of ideas for games and will pop back later and post them.

Party bags - balloons, snazzy pens, stickers, smelly rubbers, notepad, hair accessories / cheap bangle.

...think christmas stockings!

Outside or inside games:

PUTTING BABY TO BED....
2 teams
Two sets of outdoor adult clothes like coat, gloves, hat, scarf
2 large teddies / dolls

Each person has to dress up in the adult stuff (with help from team members) - run to 'base' (ideally via obstacles and narrow places where teams can clash and get caught up!)where an adult is holding the 'baby', grab the baby and run back to their team, take extra clothes off, put them on next team member who takes the 'baby' back to the adult. First team to finish wins.

PUTTING THE TAIL ON THE DONKEY (you probably know this one??)

EATING CHOCOLATE:
2 teams again and a hat, scarf and adult gloves and a knife and fork each.
Slab of chocolate on a plate (you choose the size!). Each team member has to dress up in the extra clothing and then USING THE KNIFE AND FORK WITH BIG GLOVES ON NO HANDS ALLOWED! cut off pieces of choc and eat it until the whistle blows and then swap with the next team member. First team to finish the choc wins.

More later...

You will get it right - they will love anything you do - my parents were legendary at this as no money and had to use their imagination. People at school admitted trying to make friends with me before my birthday to get an invite though they weren't bothered with me inbetween times!

Egg and spoon race

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 13:57

FIND YOUR PARTNER:

Each person has a picture of half of a pair of something pinned to their back (e.g a sock). They have to find out who they are and then find their 'other half'. They can only ask questions and the answers can be mimed but they are not allowed to be told who they are.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 13:59

GRANDMOTHER'S FOOTSTEPS:

One person (suggest adult) stands a distance away with their back to everyone. Everyone creeps up and tries to reach them without being seen moving. The person at the front can turn round at any time and whoever is seen moving is out of the game. The winner actually gets to and touches the person at the front.

MUSICAL CHAIRS

MUSICAL STATUES

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 14:07

PASS THE BALLOON:
2 teams each with a ballon.
Team members in a line and have to pass the balloon along the line without touching the balloon with their hands. If they drop it / touch it with their hands they have to go back to the beginning and start again. First balloon to the end and that team wins.

CHINESE WHISPERS:
All in a circle. You whisper something to the birthday girl and she has to whisper what she heard to the next person. No-one is allowed to repeat what they said and then you see what pops out at the other end!

WHAT'S MISSING:
You can show them a box of stuff and give them time to try and memorise it (not too long). Then remove one item without them seeing you and whoever can guess what is missing, wins a prize.

WHEELBARROW RACE:
Pairs
One is the wheelbarrow (hands on the floor) and their partner holds them up by their legs and everyone races from one place to the other as fast as they can. First pair there wins.

STUCK IN THE MUD:
Everyone runs around madly and someone is 'it'. If you get touched by that person you have to stand still with your legs and arms apart. You can be freed by someone crawling through your legs. The aim is to get everyone stuck in the mud!

Some fab ideas thanks, you must have had fun at your parties

Will copy them all down and show DD.

DRAWING GAME:
two teams and two big pieces of paper and a pen.

Adult whispers in first team members ear what they are to draw and the team has to guess what it is, then the next person goes up etc. (each team will need a different list of suggestions or give them the ideas in reverse order so they don't hear and copy. First team to finish, wins.

Are these sounding like the sorts of things you might be after?

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 14:10

That's not fair - we weren't allowed to know in advance (stamp stamp ).

sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 14:16

Maybe I should keep ideas to myself then and surprise DD on the day.

She was in our bedroom early on sunday with notebook and pen planning her party and has strong ideas on what she wants and does'nt want.

Probably best not to say really as she will drive us mad planning them from now to then.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 19:05

Ooooh! I actually think in hindsight that it was great to be the party girl without having any knowledge of what was happening next as it kept it all a surprise and stopped me 'taking charge' in any way or having an opinion on anything - I got as swept away as the others and it was fab. I did get to choose who came (I was given a total number though) and special things to be included in the party food, what I wore and I think that was about it. I LOVED them!

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 19:06

p.s. let me know if you want more ideas - there are still more in the pot.

sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 21:33

More ideas would be great,thanks.

DD has told me what food she would like and has a new party dress and shoes.

We wrote the invitations out earlier na dshe got to choose who to invite ,mostly girls and only 3 boys much to her brothers disgust.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 21:44

That sounds great!

oh yes and I recall that we had loud rowdy games then the birthday tea and then quieter ones. When a parent came to collect their beloved, the child was taken out to them so that no adults changed the tone of the party if that makes sense.....

GUESS THE PERSON:
Blindfold a person and then they are presented with someone and they have to guess by touching them who it is.

THROW PENNIES:
Outside with a bowl of water with a coin in. They have to throw pennies in to try and cover the coin.

MUSICAL BUMPS
MUSICAL CHAIRS
MUSICAL STATUES
PASS THE PARCEL

ANIMAL NOISES:
Similar to find the pair - picture of an animal pinned to each persons back and all at the same time, people make the noise of all the animals they can see on people's backs and you have to guess who you are.

CLOWN FACES:
In pairs. Get face paints and they paint each other's faces and the best pair wins.

APPLE BOBBING (but they will get soaked!)

FLAP THE FISH:
2 teams,a large paper fish and a magazine for each team member. They have to flap the mags to create air to move the fish from the start to the finish and the first fish to the finish line is the winner (well that team is!)

PosieParker · 16/04/2008 21:44

I don't do party bags each child gets a helium balloon (latex not foil) £1.12, with something in it so it lasts for weeks and a pencil and sweets tied at the bottom.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 21:46

Limbo dancing

sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 21:53

Loving the flap the fish game.

Good idea about the rowdy games first before they eat, don't want loads of sick children on my hands.

helium balloons sound good.

My DH says I am getting more excited than DD.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 21:54

DUCKY DUCKY:
One person blind folded and then they have another child put infront of them. The lindfolded one says 'ducky ducky' and the other child says 'quack quack quack' and the blindfolded one has to guess who it is.

TUG OF WAR

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 16/04/2008 21:54

I think i'm more excited than the pair of you!

sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 22:09

Will have to post some pictures on my profile of the party for you on this thread.

Don't forget if the DC are getting too loud and need calming down then go for sleeping lions. All the DC lay down on the floor completely still. First one to move is out and have to help look for other DC moving.

OR

Get DC to sit in a circle, have one DC in the middle blind folded. Place a large set of jangley keys in front of blind folded child. Whilst child is blind folded, choose another DC to creep round the outside of the cirle back to where they had started from, they then have to tip toe in and pick the keys up without the DC in the middle hearing. Encourage the blind folded child to point if they hear any movement.

sunflowervalley · 16/04/2008 22:47

Sleeping lions sounds good to play after they have eaten.
